I'm glad someone else is actually *gasp* critical of this show instead of putting blinders on. I agree, I liked it but I'm not sure I get the hype surrounding it. I also really don't like that the whole show basically looks like one big Gillette commercial -- too airbrushed and polished and stuff. My suspension of disbelief goes deeper when the universe looks lived-in like Blade Runner, not brand new out of the box.Sarge wrote:I finished off Firefly. I can both see why people want it to come back and how it achieved cult-classic status, and I can also see why it failed when it came out. It feels like it was about ten years too early, for the wrong audience on Fox. Spin it up as a Netflix original, and we'd probably be looking at multiple seasons.
My take on it is that it's good, with a few problematic elements (at least for my world view; your mileage may vary), but not amazing. I'm glad I watched it, but there was no way it was hitting the target that its fans had built up over the years.
So what have you guys been watching lately?

I just finished off watching the Simpsons seasons 2-9. At the risk of starting that conversation again, I will say that there's no disputing the show starts to go downhill around season 9. It still has some great moments, but the Homer-is-a-jerk thing is really beaten to the ground, so many episodes are centered around that and it really gets tiresome. I know everyone's probably sick of the "when did the Simpsons start to get bad?" talking point but I just had to throw my two cents out there.

Let's make sure to give firefly credit where credit is due. It did have better character writing than almost any other science-fiction show, especially at the time. It also had a rather unique setting. But it also ended too early which means that it carries that same mystery of other people and things that ended prematurely which means we can imagine all the greatness it could have been and we don't have to worry about it burning out .

My first exposure to Firefly was about 30 minutes of Serenity while we were in the last bit of time waiting in line for the Wii; I was quite delirious at this point because I hadn't slept so I only processed bits and pieces, and naturally I couldn't follow the plot. I'd heard of Firefly from my recent ex I was still friends with, but I wanted nothing to do with it because of a minor case of spite (she'd be introduced to it through the guy she left me for).
Flash forward a couple of years. I'm on my own in Seattle and I've been hearing lots of people say that Firefly was really good. No details or anything, just that it was a quality series. I decided "fuck it, let's grab it" and picked up the series and Serenity. They arrived on a Friday, so I popped in the first disc after I got home.
After finishing the 12th episode I realized it was 2 am. So I reluctantly went to bed and watched the reset in the morning. For me the characters really resonated with me; they were well written and well acted and the focus was on them. I loved every single one.

Worth mentioning too that the Battlestar Galactica reboot seemed to borrow some things from the way Firefly was shot. There's even a fun little cameo they did just for funmarurun wrote:Let's make sure to give firefly credit where credit is due. I think people remember Firefly fondly because they saw the potential there for what the show could have been if it didn't get cancelled.
I don't know that I would call it one of the best sci fi shows ever, but I absolutely think it would have been if had gotten at least two more seasons.

Re: So what have you guys been watching lately?

I just finished watching the first season of Magnum, P.I. circa 1980.
Believe it or not, it still holds up.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Well, with a car like that on the cover, how could it not hold up?
