Yeah, and I do love Gotham for that reason. It works well as its own thing.

Herman's Head | 1991-1994 | 72eps | 8/10
Once in a while I remember a show I used to like as a kid, and perhaps bother to go on Youtube and watch an episode or two of it for nostalgia's sake. Sometimes the show is still good enough that I decide to watch the entire thing. The last time this happened was back in 2010 when I watched the entirety of Night Court. And now again in 2016, with myself finishing all 72 episodes of Herman's Head via a Youtube channel.
This show's concept focuses on the life of a young magazine article fact checker. He lives in Manhattan and aspires to be a renowned writer. He's a bachelor with a small crappy apartment and a rather simple little life. His occupation doesn't pay much, his coworkers are all frenemies, and apparently Herman only has one friend outside his dayjob. He spends his free time at bars, attempting to date, and once in a while writing stuff he hopes will get published someday.
That wouldn't make much of a premise for a show, except for the fact that Herman's mind's struggles are shown on screen. This is done via various actors playing his different mental aspects; lust, fear, passion, and logic. Watching his mind play out decision making processes with these actors' portrayals is always amusing. Sometimes serious, usually absurd, and occasionally grandiose, these skits add the spice to this show. If this idea sound's like Pixar's recent "Inside Out", congratulations, you're on to something.
When I originally watched this show I was around 12 or 13 years old. I remember thinking it was funny, but it didn't hook me. As a twelve year old trying to relate to the misadventures of a 27 year old, well that's a bit limiting. Going back as a 37 year old and watching this series is a whole different experience. I can relate to some of Herman's struggles, when I think back to when I was his age, and the priorities he has to calculate. (Especially in the world of dating and all of its wonderful rewards and pitfalls.) It's also interesting to go back and watch a show set in the early 1990s, with the waves of nostalgia and cultural differences that entails.
I'm not sure if sitcoms like Herman's Head even exist anymore. It's a format that for all I know is extinct or close to it. Furthermore, the raw humor and disregard for political correctness older sitcoms like this exhibit, is all rather taboo in today's world. Herman's Head is from a different reality, a long lost era, and it feels like it. But beyond the cheap one liners, revolving door eye candy, and constant sex jokes, this show really had heart. It was a unique idea, executed well, and explored competently. I found something to enjoy in each of its 72 episodes, and legitimately laughed once in a while. Not bad for a show that's around a quarter century old now.

I finished off Firefly. I can both see why people want it to come back and how it achieved cult-classic status, and I can also see why it failed when it came out. It feels like it was about ten years too early, for the wrong audience on Fox. Spin it up as a Netflix original, and we'd probably be looking at multiple seasons.
My take on it is that it's good, with a few problematic elements (at least for my world view; your mileage may vary), but not amazing. I'm glad I watched it, but there was no way it was hitting the target that its fans had built up over the years.

That about sums it up for me too. I'm a big fan, but it's certainly not the alpha and omega of sci-fi TV or whatever haha.
Not sure how I feel about Serenity. Only saw it once I think when it was out in theaters.

Whedon shows seem to always hit their stride in season 2, so I think Firefly got cut down before it could really shine. Buffy's second season is the one that really got people talking. Angel seemed to finally figure out what kind of show it wanted to be in season 2, and people were writing Dollhouse off as a disaster until season 2 came around and the show started to finally show more of Whedon's vision for it(though people tend to blame Fox for the first season's problems)
Even Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which Joss was only partially involved with got criticized heavily until the first season got passed the halfway mark where people gradually started coming around, and from season 2 onward people seemed to be enjoying the show
The fact that Firefly was as good as it was in its first season was impressive as Whedon shows always have those first season growing pains

I missed out on the 25th Letterkenny marathon (my immediate family would have nothing to do with it). I managed to get a good "pirate" haul over that the "Bay". So excited!

finished season 1 of Dawson's Creek over the weekend. Started on the second. Been about a decade since we last watched it. Still love this show. Kevin Williamson rules.

My girl gets together with her lady friends once a week to drink wine and watch that; they're into season 3 now. I'll tell her to save you a spot on the couch.noiseredux wrote:finished season 1 of Dawson's Creek over the weekend. Started on the second. Been about a decade since we last watched it.
