Atari 2600 Flashback Handheld big discount, free ship (read)

Post by Tanooki »

I've been mulling this one for awhile now but plunged today.

Why? Deals.

MSRP from ATGames is $60, but it usually is priced at $45-50 most places I've noticed it.

Today two things, both with Toys R Us.

It's on sale for $29.99. *AND* Today only, until midnight I guess, FREE SHIPPING and that is guaranteed supposedly by Dec24.

...and as a bonus, these things dislike SD cards of a high class speed and over 8GB. Best deal right now is amazon. $11.31 for 2 x 4GB Class 4 SanDisk SD cards (free ship w/prime)

Memory Card Pack:

I researched this, and did more poking around the most picky place I could think of Atari Age for this. They setup its own forum for the thing. It's VERY compatible with nearly all games including homebrew. I won't link it, but, on the site someone put a bundle together back on Dec1 with all legit games that work already primed and ready for a SD card (pop, drop, and play.) It is missing a few things I've noticed but no one has repackaged it since so the SMB wannabe Princess Rescue works but isn't included.

16GB and higher end (10~) memory cards won't play nice with the thing, that's why I included the link.

Enjoy if you're an atari 2600 fan or not, there's plenty of gems here with some fairly solid arcade conversions to do when you factor in the SD card.

There are some compatibility hiccups but it's pretty good. It obviously isn't going to work for any Supercharger games or games that use specific hardware tricks.

My family already ordered me one for Christmas or I'd jump on this. It's well worth $30.
I had an old 128 megabyte SD card laying around that will get to see use again.

dumb question: does this do anything better than playing 2600 games on a modded PSP would?

Can it even be hacked to do anything more interesting than 2600 games?

Does it to more than a PSP, likely not, it's about as vanilla as the virtual console -- no real perks. As to hacking, not sure on that one. I didn't dig that deep into the AA threads about it, but I did see people working on figuring it out and breaking it open to check it out at this rate.

I don't know but the pre-release version had a version of Space Invaders that was essentially Space Invaders Color arcade, though an AtGames representative at Atari age told me it was designed specifically for the hardware and wasn't an arcade ROM.

The system comes with a version of Frogger that is unique to it as well which is kind of cool.

For anyone happy with their PSP just stick with your PSP but this is good to lug around as a cheap toy that you won't care about if it breaks.

Can't wait, one more day and it'll be here through Fedex, and my memory card showed up today too. The spare will get used, I have that sketchy Genesis handheld from a flea market pickup I can stuff some fun onto.
