Japanese Box Art of Western Games.

Post by Gunstar Green »

We often like to poke fun at really bad western renditions of Japanese games, but what about when it's the other way around?

I'll start off with a pretty incredible example (at least to me). Their renditions of Wing Commander are pretty stunning and they actually interpreted the designs from the technical drawings in the manuals really well while adding some flair. Really cool stuff.

DAMN their cover art was better than ours for that series (IMO at least).

Holy crap nice find with Wing Commander. I know I'm a fan of Star Wars quite a bit, not to the big toy ownership nerdy level of things, but even the almighty Tie Fighter and the earlier X-Wing game I still put in 2nd place behind the first two Wing Commander titles and their add-on campaigns. I don't recall ever seeing that art as it usually doesn't get tossed around, even on WC fan sites that go over such things.

I think what hurts that Comix Zone art is the "ARGHHHH" that's just kind of floating out there for no reason.

Otherwise I think it's alright, though not as good as the US artwork.

The other examples shown so far are lovely though.

I'd say the cover made me immediately think of JoJo, if you're familiar with it.

Seems like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has influenced a lot of Japanese pop culture over the years so I wonder if there is a connection there haha.

I don't mind the Comix Zone art (it is very JoJo) but I think it rubs people the wrong way since Comix Zone is supposed to be very 90's comic book styled and they don't like seeing it anime-ized.

Okay I can easily see that haha, it's definitely very anime instead of Western comic book.

Anime Ultima and Comix Zone, guess I won't be liked for it but I prefer it, definitely for Comix Zone. The US art just feels so dated and even then was overly generic comic fare.
