Oh yeah, order of play definitely affects how a person perceives a game. I have played every zelda game except spirit tracks, link between worlds and triforce heroes and the last that beat just recently was A Link to the Past. I think the game is okay, but nowhere near my favorite because nostalgia doesn't come in to play and the things that make zelda special, that A Link to the Past may have really started, were present in the other games I played first.
Do I think it is bad? No. Do I see why people put that first? Yes. I just had different experiences that put that one further down my list.
On topic, I think hazelnut bastille looks great and will definitely keep an eye on it.
I love indy games that have clear influences. You can tell that it is a passion project for that person. They want to pay homage to the games they grew up with and loved.

My first Zelda was Zelda II. Wrap your brain around that one!
Despite that, my favorites in the series are LttP and Link's Awakening.

Ain't nothing wrong with that. Starting with the "black sheep," is great! It would be like a person's first sonic game being 3d blast. Not a bad game, just very different.Sarge wrote:My first Zelda was Zelda II. Wrap your brain around that one!

P.S. I love me some Link's Awakening. My number 2 favorite.

After replaying again not too long ago, about the only thing that would improve it would be more buttons so you didn't have to item-swap so much. Other than that, it's an excellent blend of Link to the Past and the original Zelda. So good.

I'm with Sarge as Zelda ll being my 1st LoZ. I didn't even know what it was when I played it initially at a friend's house when I was 8-9. I just remember hating it.
I tried it again in later years and appreciate it for it's differences from the original.
Also, I just could not get into TP.

Back in the day when you only had a few games at your disposal and families members had their own set of random games, I remember my dad's father and their family having Sonic 1, Metroid, and Zelda 2. It was an amazing combo and I always played those three when I was over there. I remember my uncles having passwords for Metroid so that was cool. I guess a perk to passwords is that you can't really mess up their playthrough or anything. But yeah I got lucky and was exposed to both the original two Zelda games right out of the gate before the SNES.
For whatever reason I don't remember being able to rent Metroid much, it was always out or something. I did a few times. Sonic 1, I have no idea why but I never saw around and like nobody else owned it, but everyone else and their dog owned Sonic 2. I think that was the only place I ever played Zelda 2 at until later when I started emulating and such. So all three games were this allured mystery until years later when I finally had access to them again via emulation or when I finally had my own money to spend.
I think Ocarina of Time was one of the first games I ever bought with my own allowance. I still own that gold cart and box to this day. Also kept the Majora's Mask complete box in great shape as well over the years.
I actually think... the two friends my parents had briefly when we lived in Tennessee, were the couple that introduced me to Zelda 1, then Star Wars, then Link to the Past the last time we saw them before we moved. Crazy tiny brief memories that set my whole world in motion haha.

You want to wrap around an odd one, find someone who has their first experience in this Zelda world being Faces of Evil, Wand of Gamelon, or by far worse Zelda's Adventure. If you went into them knowing absolutely no experience with the NES/SNES I question if someone would hate it that bad not knowing better. Perhaps the third it had a huge pile of technical problems, but the Zelda2 wannabes really aren't that bad.
