3D0

Is the 3D0 worth getting? Does anyone know how much they go for and if they're prone to broken disc drives? Lastly, what are good games to pick up?

good game library. i'm just finding all of this out now. good games include but are not limited to:

star control 2
road rash
need for speed
Jurassic park interactive
return fire

i couldn't get into the alone in the dark series, but some other people think its a good game.

i personally found mine sitting in my grandparents garage. after asking whos it was and nobody knew, i adopted it, and have had tons of fun ever since. also some games are rare and expensive, some may be more than the console itself.

The 3DO has no good exclusives. Many of it's best games (Star Control II and Syndicate) appeared on other platforms as well. Really, I see the 3DO as a good system for someone who's looking to collect. There really aren't any compelling titles that you need a 3DO to play.

The FZ-1 is known for disc tray errors, so most people recommend the FZ-10 (top loading) model. Past that I've never heard much about damaged lens or other problems.

One of the primary perks of the 3DO is that it received a lot of superior ports in its time, as it was the more powerful CD-based system of its time. For a very long while it had the best port of Street Fighter II: Turbo and still has one of the best ports of Samurai Shodown (excluding the Neo Geo, of course). In the same vein, it had superior ports to a number of PC games, including Flashback, Alone in the Dark and Out of This World, and the most heralded game on the system (often considered one of the greatest games of all time), Star Control II. It's worth noting that the developers of Star Control II ported the 3DO version to PC for free since then. It also had the best ports of some of the FMV games - the most famous of which is Night Trap (the 3DO version features the highest resolution of video of any of the ports).

Most titles that were exclusive in 3DO's generation were later ported to PC, Saturn, or PlayStation, which includes Gex, Need for Speed, Road Rash, Return Fire, Casper, and many others. I have no idea if any of them are superior on 3DO to the later ports. Crash 'n Burn is one game that comes to mind that stayed exclusive, though I can't vouch for its quality. FIFA International Soccer for 3DO supports six players, if you're into the multiplayer thing.

See another thread here for more recommendations, since I only own about five or six of the games I named:

Wow you guys are clueless.

The 3DO goes for around $70 on eBay. The FZ-1 is the best model. The Goldstar model is the "bad model" with lots of people experiencing problems with games not loading.

I own 14 different systems and I have to say that the 3DO is probably my 3rd favorite after the Dreamcast and Saturn.

It has plenty of great games:
Wolfenstein 3D
Flashback
Immercenary
Cannon Fodder
Super Wing Commander
Samurai Shodown
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Starfighter
Crash N Burn
Shockwave
Shockwave 2
Out of this World
Battlesport
Captain Quazar
Lost Eden
The Horde
Foes of Ali
Lucienne's Quest
Daedalus Encounter

And a couple of must play games:
Alone in the Dark
Gex
Killing Time
Need For Speed
Space Hulk
Star Control 2
Return Fire
Alone In The Dark
Wing Commander III
Road Rash
Dr Hauzer

It is a wonderful system full of great games that I still haven't gotten around to playing. The FZ-1 is incredibly sturdy with excellent build quality. This baby is around 15 years old and works like a charm meanwhile I had to go through 3 PS2s and 2 Xboxes.

Yes some of it's greatest games were ported to other consoles but those ports are terrible. Need For Speed on the Saturn/PSX is a completely different game. Road Rash on the PSX/Saturn has lower resolution graphics, godawful music, and terrible sound. The 3DO version of Wing Commander III is the best version and is one of the greatest games of all time along with Space Hulk and Star Control 2.

The reason the ports on the PSX and Saturn are very poor is because they weren't done by the original studios. Once the 3DO was deemed a "failure" EA tried to recoup it's losses by quickly porting it's best published titles as fast as possible.

It's a great and underrated system usually criticized and assaulted by people who have never played it and have no knowledge of it.

i have my 3do since my mom bought it for me in 1994. since then i never had any problems whatsoever with it. the fz-1 to me is the best model looks good, pretty heavy too it was well made. now the fz-10 looks cool but it has that cheap feel to it, and the goldstar looks well ugly? and it has problems reading back ups from what i hear correct me if i am wrong. the sanyo looks relly good but it seams like another goldstar just slightly a better company. plus it's a import. get one if you can find one. :)

I paid 104$ shipped for the fz10, it came complete in mint condition, all original paper work, 4 games all complete and mint. Gex, which the system was boxed with, need for speed, Street Fighter Turbo, and i cant remember the other one as i am to lazy to get up and look hehe. Also some extra goodies he never said he had. Personally i like the 10 over the other models, gold star is...well, like he said, ugly. Also i worry about disk tray problems, which is why i opt to own a model 2 sega cd vs a model 1. But thats just me.

All in all...its a neat system, im not sure where it lands on my list of must haves though. It has its own special place in my heart, but if you dont have a dreamcast or saturn....id say pick one of those up first.

One thing else to note, i can only assume people are using horrible media disks, with a horrible drive. I burn my 3do games at 48x....and i have yet to have a game not work. I did 1 game at 4 and i heard the laser move just as much as at 48. So not sure what the problem is with others.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

Thanks guys. I might get one but still, the system I really want is a Neo Geo. But they're so expensive.

I loved my 3DO while I had it. I had the Sanyo model and had no problems with it while I had it. Unfortunately I didn't have anywhere to keep it and needed the money :(
