WWII Games where you don't fight as the Allies?

Post by Gunstar Green »

I brought this up in the Slack chat because I got to thinking about it while playing Taito's Sky Destroyer, an arcade game where you fly a Japanese Zero against American planes and ships. This is of course in stark contrast to games like Capcom's 1942 series where you do the opposite despite it being a Japanese made game.

I got to wondering what the Japanese perspective on this might have been and how many games are out there where you fight on the side that history has marked, "the bad guys."

While pretty much every online WW2 shooter allows you to, the only single play experiences that come to mind are:

You play as the Germans in Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad.
Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts also had a German Campaign.
Battlestations: Pacific has a "what could have happened" story line in which you play as Japan, but a Japan who won at Midway.

Fairly certain you can play as the nazis in MOH Heroes 2 on Wii/PSP in multiplayer mode. Same could be said for others from the COD/MOH family with online mode like World at War you can be the Japanese and Germans.

Sky Destroyer from Namco on Famicom you fly in a zero and blow the crap out of American air and sea power.

Iron storm for the saturn. Turn based strategy where you pick a side, united states, or nazi germany or japan to rewrite history.

That was the example I gave.

And it's Taito.

Easy mistake to make they both have those boring boxy black cartridges.

Dino D-Day is the best WWII shooter of all time. I mean, it's only online, so it's kind of not applicable to this discussion, but there aren't many games that let you play as a Nazi Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Why have I never heard of this, what I can only assume to be, absolute classic?

Good point they do. I've never actually bought it so I forgot probably due to the shape. I own two fake copies thanks to the supervision 115in1 and the super games 500in1 modern cart I have.

It's the greatest online shooter of all time. It's frequently on sale on Steam for like $0.50. There's no single player per se, but there's like a $1 DLC that adds a hoard mode that can be played online or solo. It's the best fifty cents I've ever spent.

I really can't believe you guys left these out:

Panzer General let you play as either Germany or Allied European forces, though the primary campaign was from the Nazi viewpoint.

While the US, Japan, Germany, the UK, Australia, and the Soviet Union are playable, the campaigns focused on the US and Japanese sides of the war in the Pacific.
