The skill system I TOTALLY get you on. It took me like, 10 or 20 hours in to REALLY get a hang of all the game's system, especially the combat. The way they do skills in that game is just so unlike any of the other ones (especially the older ones you'd played), I can totally see why it overwhelmed you. I would defintely not recommend Graces as someone's first post-mid-2000's Tales game just because of how crazy it tries to go with things. Hearts R has some really cool ideas about how you level up your characters. It's kind of halfway between the skill systems in Graces and the Sphere Grid from FFX. If you dug Graces but it just overwhelmed you with all of the intricacies (totally understandable. I wasn't trying to call you out or anything, just trying to understand your point of view), I think you might enjoy Hearts if you have a Vita or PSTV to play it onXeogred wrote:Well when you throw it at me like that, you've got a good point... I don't recall having to think or bother with the cooking in the other games I briefly played. So maybe it's just an exclusive probably to Graces F (for me).PartridgeSenpai wrote:That's ceratinly the most unique complaint about that game I've heard, or any Tales game for that matterXeogred wrote:The cooking mechanics in Graces F ruined that one for me. It was so taxing after awhile having to micro manage systems in between just about every single fight. Just way too much. Still going to try out more Tales someday and hope they're simpler than that.(most of the fan issues I hear about Graces is the story or the really different combat). I think there's maybe been one out of the 5 or so Tales games I've played ever even payed attention to cooking. Like, unless you're really crazy about seeing ALL the conversations a game has, or if you're really really into min/maxing every possible situation, there's really no reason to ever worry about cooking or using it. Was there another Tales game you played where the cooking really drew you in and you were disappointed in Graces' modification of it?
It was a combination of that and constantly managing the skill system that bugged me, even though you could set it to auto and set some parameters on how the game switches around what skills the characters learn and in what order, but I kept wanting to monitor it. Yeah it was just a headache to me haha. I didn't mind the story or characters.
The others I played were Phantasia, Destiny (barely, the encounter rate was insane), and Symphonia.

Oh no worries you weren't hostile at all. lol
I luckily somehow own Destiny 2/Eternia on the PSX, so I will probably try that one out next and see how it goes.
I have yet to beat a single Tales game, but the interest is still there for whatever reason. I'm not too worried about which one I'll play next though after Destiny 2. Maybe Vesperia as it's cheap or one of the other new ones on PS3/PS4. It's reassuring to hear Graces F was one of the crazier ones with way too many systems to manage.

Earlier ones are definitely simpler, in my experience. I REALLY enjoyed Vesperia, as I found it a very logical evolution of the formula set up in Symphonia and Abyss. The biggest change from Symphonia off the top of my head are the free-running system that was introduced in Abyss, and the more elaborate skill system acquired via the weapons you use. It is definitely the second favorite of mine out of the ones I've beaten. Highly recommendedXeogred wrote:Oh no worries you weren't hostile at all. lol

Re: RPG Progress Report
Tales of Hearts made me do a saaaaad ;A;
Mostly because of similar themes that would be done in Graces, although I feel Graces did them better. That is probably in no small part to the much faster (more portable) pacing of Hearts considering it was on DS originally, and how Graces had the luxury of being a console game with a larger footprint for story/character development.
I also just unlocked the Vespiria-esque finishing mechanic, although it is MUCH more nuanced than that. I also think I got to that mechanic like, 10+ hours into Vespiria, where I was only 5 hours into Hearts when I got this one. Makes for a nice change of pace. Hearts (or at least Hearts R) has some very good tutorials on its more complex fighting aspects as well, and bleeds them in at a good pace. Not my favorite Tales game so far by any means (mostly chalking up to the "meh"-level English translation and lack of English voice-cast), but one I'm enjoying all the same

Re: RPG Progress Report
I beat Volt in Tales of Phantasia last night, so I think I should be able to finish the game tonight or tomorrow. I killed Merkabah and Lucifer in Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse this morning, so I'm hoping to have that game wrapped up this weekend. I think I need a break from RPGs for a bit after those two, though....kind of drained.

My white mage is level 9. And I am pleased to find that the Zombull + Troll group is the first one up on a hard reset, so after I get to the peninsula I can tent to save and then start with a good fight. The harder thing is actually the resetting if the level doesn't give me a point of luck; I need 17 to guarantee run success.

Tales of Phantasia: sitting at 23 hours in game now and trying to just beat the darned thing. The bad part is the dungeons even though I'm at lvl 50 almost all around(except for stupid chester who still hasn't hit 40 yet even though he does awesome damage), I'm still having trouble against some of these mobs especially in areas I've been to before, I'm just ready to put this one to rest but I've been having difficulty keeping my eyes open....not the best idea to play this in bed on a tiny hd tv

Final Fantasy VII - Just got to Aeris house.
I have been trying to beat it since 2000, and every time something happens to my save. Be it theft, technical failure, or lightning. So now I am running FF7 World on Retroarch (PCSX ReARMed) on my phone. Using touch screen controls until my 8bitdo FC30 comes later this week.

I've been trying to beat it since 2001, but always get bored some time after Shinra Tower.
