So...apparently, this is a real thing:

http://www.gq.com/story/kanye-west-turbo-grafx-16-samples

(The article's author clearly doesn't know much about video games or recognize the fact that all of the track names are Wii games.)

I think his music is only OK, but I would probably buy this on principle. (If it's released, I would also expect the price of the system and its games to rise even further.)

Haha, "80's era videogames like...Resident Evil"

Modern journalism is so wonderful.

Is now a bad time to get into collecting for this system?

I ask because of the general rise in price in nearly everything else (NGPC insanity has pretty much ended my idea of completing my collection for that.)

I've been thinking of getting a Japanese PC Engine for a while now as I enjoyed the Wii VC games I played for it and the Japanese box art looks great, but have been baffled by all the different models available. I'm not looking to spend over $125 on a unit and would be happy to just have access to the Japanese Hu-card games so have been eyeing up some CoreGrafx/2 models that I can get within my budget. Is this version a good entry point to the system?

Is it still a system that is affordable to collect for or are things getting crazy?

I think my CD might be on the edge of giving up the ghost. Before I went on vacation I decided to put some time in to the Ys I & II collection and it didn't feel like reading the disk for a while til I fiddled with the caddy a bit. After that it was ok, but I feel like it's only a matter of time.

I have no idea what your monetary situation is.

But to me personally... When it comes to American games, that ship has sailed. There is one - maybe two - left I'd like to get and I may not be able to do that given how their prices have risen.

Silver lining: my favorite type of PCE game - Japan-exclusive RPGs - are still somewhat affordable. I seem to be finding them for $20-$30 dollars per game.

I'm not looking for games that are super expensive to collect...I don't want to be a part of the problem that the modern collecting market has become anymore, the price range you mention is fine, and I'd be picking up a Japanese system so I wouldn't be collecting American games anyway.

I would appreciate some advice on what kind of money I should realistically be looking to pay for the console itself though. Is $100 about the average for the basic system?

A HuCard-only PC Engine or CoreGrafx will probably run you around $100. To get a CD-capable setup would probably run $250 or so. And CD units are old enough that most need their capacitors and CD lenses replaced, though that 250 might get something with one of those things done.

Popo, what setup do you have? There are folks around who can install new lasers in most units.

Turbo CD. When the problem first manifested itself I poked around on Google, and it seems someone else who had this problem discovered the issue was that the laser caddy wasn't moving all the way to the very interior of its track. The Turbo CD reads from the very interior first. So when I manually moved it all the way towards the spindle it started working. But that makes me concerned that those gears are going to go at some point.

Thanks. I'm trying to work out what the difference is between the Coregrafx 1 and 2. Is there ANY advantage in getting the Coregrafx 2? Racketboy's guide just seems to indicate that it was a cheaper to manufacture design...Is that it?
