Yeah, I didn't have that problem when I played it. It's kinda useful when you don't know Japanese sometimes (but not usually!). I read a review somewhere that griped about that, that the official translation actually deviated from the spoken dialogue quite a bit.

Yeah, the guy who was doing the Hearts DS translation before R got announced had some major gripes. Ignoring some of the changes that impact the tone of the story, they didn't even stay consistent with existing translations of Arte names and derived Artes.

It is interesting when I notice that a translation is diverging significantly from the original dialog, with the stuff I can notice with my "I used to watch a lot of anime" level of Japanese. But what's even cooler is when things involving wordplay can still work across languages. One that sticks out is from the latest Star Ocean. In one of the side skits one of your female party members is talking with the main character's childhood female friend. The conversation goes something like this:

"Fidel used to pound me all the time."
"What?!"
"Yeah, club, war hammer, mace; he made sure I was trained on a lot of weapons"
"Ahh..."

And the Japanese vocals going with it call out the weapons by English name, so I'm pretty sure the double entendre around "pound" exists in Japanese as well.

Hmmmmm. I have noticed there are quite a few jokey lines (like, every other damn sentence) that really differ from the Japanese voiced lines. I can definitely see how that would piss off someone with a good knowledge of Japanese. I'll just have to try to pay more attention to the voices than the worded dialogue. Thanks for the heads up about it though! :D

As far as the combat system goes, it's interesting to see this game, as it's the game that was made in between Vesperia and Graces, with Graces changing it up A LOT. This game isn't quite as complex as Graces (sadly), but it's still different enough that I'm intrigued at how a full-party battle works.

I really enjoyed the combat. It was smoother than something like Vesperia, and the pacing for the entire game was blisteringly fast.

The cooking mechanics in Graces F ruined that one for me. It was so taxing after awhile having to micro manage systems in between just about every single fight. Just way too much. Still going to try out more Tales someday and hope they're simpler than that.

That's ceratinly the most unique complaint about that game I've heard, or any Tales game for that matter :lol: (most of the fan issues I hear about Graces is the story or the really different combat). I think there's maybe been one out of the 5 or so Tales games I've played ever even payed attention to cooking. Like, unless you're really crazy about seeing ALL the conversations a game has, or if you're really really into min/maxing every possible situation, there's really no reason to ever worry about cooking or using it. Was there another Tales game you played where the cooking really drew you in and you were disappointed in Graces' modification of it?

Tales - since I'm determined to beat this, I just got Undine and Ifrit again headed for gnome now. Should be easily pickings with those two on my side first this time around...

Well when you throw it at me like that, you've got a good point... I don't recall having to think or bother with the cooking in the other games I briefly played. So maybe it's just an exclusive probably to Graces F (for me).

It was a combination of that and constantly managing the skill system that bugged me, even though you could set it to auto and set some parameters on how the game switches around what skills the characters learn and in what order, but I kept wanting to monitor it. Yeah it was just a headache to me haha. I didn't mind the story or characters.

The others I played were Phantasia, Destiny (barely, the encounter rate was insane), and Symphonia.

I'm trying to finish off Seiken Densetsu 3. I've beaten the eight God Beasts and done the final class change but I'm getting murdered by the Darkshine Knight in the next room.

Not quite sure what I'm suddenly doing wrong as the last God Beast was surprisingly easy in comparison.
