I'm in the same boat. I'd like to thank those of you that have contributed to respectful and reasonable dialogue. Those moments have been edifying.

I also enjoy these discussions when they remain civil. They get me out of my echo-chamber and make me justify my views. (In some cases, I cannot - or cannot as well as I thought I could - and I have to rethink them a bit.)
I guess I just don't feel as hopeless about other people as you do, Opie Woowie-Wok, even though I realize there is a Sisyphean aspect to online debate. If I can't find ways to take my ideas from the ivory tower down to the street, I just don't think those ideas have great utility, so I don't stop trying.
And I double space after every period because it pleases the lord.
Two spaces after a period is an artifact from typewriters. (Wikipedia tells me I am wrong about this.) Modern fonts are designed not to need two spaces after periods for legibility. But this actually seems somewhat irrelevant, because evidence is sorely lacking that two spaces after a period improve legibility.
I suspect it doesn't really matter that much. So I'll keep doing my double-space, out of sheer habit. Lots of places autocorrect me on that, anyway, including here!
