Play N Trade still kinda does that...I think..I've never been to one.noiseredux wrote:I forgot about the price lists! so awesome. Yeah I miss them. Wish there were still chains that dealt with used cartridges and games from retro systems. There is a little hole in the wall place near me. But it's so hit or miss.

Were those the price lists in GamePro etc.?
I remember seeing a games list with NeoGeo AES games and flipping out... "$300 for Samurai Shodown??!?!?! HOLY COW!!".

I miss Funco quite a bit. Recently, I was flipping through old early 90's VG mags and came across several of those old newspaper style price lists. Nostalgia is awesome.

Yeah, I really miss Funcoland too!! There aren't any stores in my area around that carry any old games like that anymore.. my local Gamecrazy long ago had classic DC, PS, SNES, Genesis games but stopped years ago.. and there are a few pawn shops but it's hit or miss just like yard sales/flea markets.. unfortunatelythe King wrote:Does anyone else miss Funcoland?
I just loved going in and picking up a few classic karts for my nes or genesis while getting a newer used game as well. I know they were converted into gamestops, but they don't carry the older games anymore. It was like one day I went in and all the Nintendo games were gone, no warning.
Longing for the good ole days...i must be getting old.

Re: Funcoland
damn, i love talking about funcoland
like racketboy, i also waited for those pricelists to come in the newspaper/mail every so often. when i owned a not-often-played nintendo 64 and all my friends were playing final fantasy 7, i was getting geeked up about buying earthbound and killer instinct. i started writing a really long rant/retrospective but i kept getting sidetracked talking to my roommate, so rather than post a convoluted mess...
i remember when gamestop first came out though, it was around the release of the gba. my friend got fatal fury for sega genesis for 2 bucks! about two years later when i started working at a gamestop all those deals were pretty nonexistent though.

Re: Funcoland
Funcoland was kickass! I still remember the awesome Sonic parade balloon they would stick on top of their stores for Sega gamers day and other big Sega related stuff. Sadly the only one near my house (back when we still lived in Jersey) was robbed in 2002 and my mom never let me go back there again.Dakinggamer87 wrote:Yeah, I really miss Funcoland too!! GameCrazy actually liquidated out their old stock of retro as a whole and only sells newer games now which sucks. But when they were liquidating the old stock I managed to get a ton of stuff for dirt cheap. The one hing that really pises me off about GameCrazy as a whole is that there's still tons of retro in most of their stores (in rural areas) but they try to charge you five freaking dollars to search their computer system (good luck getting me to do that). All scamming set aside though GameCrazy used to rock.

Re: Funcoland
Not to say this is indicative of all funcolands, but the one next to me, before it became a gamestop, was incredibly shady. When I worked at the (now) gamestop, many employees there had connections with old funcoland employees and I heard lots of fun stories.
The store manager would sell people things, and occasionally, when they paid in cash, he would later void the transaction and pocket the cash. (So the registers would be even, but the inventory would be off by whatever was sold)
If an employee saw something in the store they liked, they took it, and wrote the sku down so the store would know to add it as if they had it during inventory
When Gamestop bought funcoland and converted that store, all but 1 employee was fired and replaced (although the way some people view gamestop, they might argue that the funcoland employees should have been kept)
lots more fun stuff too

Re: Funcoland
I actually stumbled upon an old Funcoland flyer the other night in my magazine archives. I'll have to post a few images just for nostalgiaracketboy wrote:I absolutely loved them.
Mine was great and that's where I bought most of my stuff.
I used to obsess about their little newspaper-like price lists (anyone still have one?)
And they aren't technically gone -- they just got bought out and converted into Gamestops

I may be willing to pay a little cash for that if you're willing to part with it
