I did not even know it came out on the 360 and PS3. Checkmate by ninjainspandex.

In truth my TG16 collection is Bonk, JJ and Jeff, and Military Madness. So yeah, Military Madness just stays in the machine.

Thanks for all your input, guys. I'll probably end up going with the SuperGrafx and Super CD, but like I mentioned earlier, these are definitely long-term plans. I just like to have an idea of my plans for console expansions, so I appreciate the input. I know it would be cheaper to get a Turbo Duo, but just like with my Neo Geo AES, I want the SuperGrafx and one or two games for it as a trophy in addition to actually playing it. :P

I just adore the look of the classic pc engine briefcase with the white PCE, it just looks like a space station to me.

In related news I just won an auction for Mr Heli, a game I have been really been enjoying on the everdrive. Feels like a precursor game to In The Hunt, which was also made by Irem.

You win the forum. Military Madness is awesome.

Did you know there is a pretty cool port of it for the PS1?

Oh yes...The PS1 version is insane (and insanely difficult). It is the version I have played the most, and I love it. (Technically, I played through the PS1 campaign and the difficult PS1 campaign to unlock the TG16 campaign. Then, I played through that.)

Okay, so I've got question. What CD ROM drives are compatible with the CoreGrafx? I know I usually see the the CD ROM 2 shown with the CoreGrafx, but what are my options for compatibility? Does it have to be the CD ROM 2, or will any PC Engine CD model work?

I'm pretty sure any CD ROM unit will work, as long as you have the right system card for the game.

On the other hand, I hear certain models are more reliable than others, and reliability IS an issue for the system.

Would the American TurboGrafx CD work with a Japanese CoreGrafx?

Marurun could answer this more reliably than me, but I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.

I think you'd need the Japanese System card though!

No. the US Turbo CD base unit only works with the TurboGrafx. The CD drive is not region-specific, but the base units are.

I should clarify some stuff for those not very familiar with the Turbo or PC Engine. The early CD add-ons in both the US and Japan were actually 2-part affairs. There was the CD drive itself (identical except for color in the US and Japan), that little square unit just large enough to hold a CD. Then there was the base unit that held both the CD drive and the console, and contained the cache RAM and ADPCM chip (very different between Japan and the US). Why did NEC do things this way? Because that CD drive was actually a standardized part they used in other products. The CD drive itself just used a simple SCSI interface and could connect to a PC 8801MC computer, among other things. So NEC was re-using this drive in other products and saving money on manufacturing. This changed with the introduction of the Super CD-ROM2, which was a single-unit addon.

Random awesome trivia: the US TurboGrafx, when attached to the CD base, used the power adapter that came with the CD base, meaning the original adapter that came with the Turbo just sat around being useless. But don't lose that TG16 power adapter, because you can use it with the detached CD drive to power it as a basic CD player. I had one of those 3-tier wire baskets hanging next to my bed, and every night I would detach the CD drive from the console downstairs and take it upstairs to plug into my TG16 power adapter so I could listen to CDs before bed (all I had at first was Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Aladdin).

As far as I am concerned, the TurboCD/PC Engine CD is still the best and most versatile CD game console ever created.
