I still think it's funny that Sony released a PS2 thirteen years after IBM released the PS/2.

PSX was Sony's internal name for the console. Besides, you can't have a PS1 without there first being a PS2. The name PS1 for the console wasn't until the PS2's release years later.

I know, but like whoever pointed out earlier, there actually was a Sony unit called the PSX. It was a PS2 with built in DVR released in Japan.

Hm, well thanks alot for the answers, guys. I think I'll just keep typing out Gamecube, or 'GC' in dire circumstances and take the risk of someone assuming I'm playing Metroid Prime and Wind Waker on the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

At least I have some inkling of a reason as to why they decided on that abbreviation.

And they took away the ports. If only the PS2 had PS/2 ports.

Speaking of the IBM PS/2 - I am looking for a Model 25 with dual floppies if anyone has one...

I think that's the truth. The Neo Geo Pocket Color already had the NGC distinction. Why just GC wasn't used, like with the DC I don't know.
The Playstation while being developed was referred to in house at the Playstation Experimental or PS-X. It was referred to as such in gaming magazines and the abbreviation stuck post-release. When the PS2 and PSone were released, people started using PS1 more frequently. Then the release of the Sony PSX system described above really drove the nail in the old meaning of PSX's coffin.
While we're on the topic, what is the proper abbreviation for the Genesis and Saturn? I always use GEN and SAT but that doesn't seem right. (Makes me wish it was just called a Mega Drive...)

I remember an article on Nintendo's website that abbreviated it as "GCN" and I noticed in a later article it was abbreviated as "NGC" I'm thinking that it originated as a typo. Kinda like how pwn started out as a misspelling of own.

i actually just read an article about this... the game cube was not originally going to be a stand alone, isolated console, but was going to have a connection to a massive network (called the game cube network) that would allow users to download games for a small price or even play a good amount of retro/user submitted games for free. they werent even going to release games that you would have to buy from stores and pop in the system to play. the technology just wasnt there, though, and they couldnt figure out a way to create enough space in the game cube to store more than a couple games... they eventually scrapped it all together.

i actually just made all that up, but maybe...
