Pokémon is played out man, Yo-Kai Watch is the new hotness.

The full extent of my history with Pokemon games is *maybe* about an hour or two of playing Blue. And Pokemon Snap at Blockbuster.

Sums it up. The series never resonated with me.

Well if you don't like Pokémon you won't like World of Final Fantasy, because monster catching is a massive part of it.

When Pokemon released in 1998, I was 19 years old... too old to find its aesthetic or plot attractive. From then on, it seemed like every release of the game was the exact same game, over and over again, with only marginal differences. From an outsider perspective, the games' complexity seem very watered down for children, aesthetically kiddy, with a design that remains recycled. I've tried two or three Pokemon games, and it takes very little time for me to lose interest.

I understand why these games are attractive to children, and for nostalgic millennials I suppose. So the series remains massively popular with every new release selling tons. This makes me think either I'm missing the big picture, or there's just a lot of simple people who enjoy simple games. (I feel the exact same way about Animal Crossing.) Now that just makes me sound like an asshole elitist. Probably because I'm an asshole elitist. But if there IS a Pokemon RPG with a great story, great non-grindy gameplay, and captivating pacing... I might be willing to give it a shot. I don't mind being proven wrong. But that's a rare thing in the world of video games. :P Meanwhile I just stick with Pokemon for grownups, or rather; Shin Megami Tensei.

That about sums it up and is what I've gathered from posts and articles over the last few weeks (with the newest games out and all that Go craze). Basically sounds like the story has never been anything to really talk about and that the games have been increasingly easy with every release, when they probably were never that hard in the first place. So I personally feel like I'm not missing out on anything. I'd even have a hard time thinking of some Pokemon designs that I think are cool, nothing comes to mind from what I've been exposed to.

The consistent double release thing is so crazy and yeah, just a turn off for an outsider like me. But Nintendo sure has many fans by the Pokeballs here, so who knows. People eat it up and to this day I still hear people and friends my age get hyped about the new ones. Now people are freaking out about rumors that one is coming to the Switch.

Admittedly I can understand that conclusion. They're definitely not hard and generally get easier over time but isn't that true of most long running series? Besides the manual there ought to be a way for them to rework it to where it teaches you in better ways than what the modern ones do. My thing is comparing R/B/Y to Sun is sad. I love Sun but there's things i don't recall getting in R/B/Y and if i did, they usually weren't until late in game. Now there's a bunch of stuff just handed to you all the time and I'm only on the second island. Not to mention team skull is rather lame, but in a comical sense(not the team rocket sense from the anime mind you). Not to mention the ways they try to prevent you from going certain ways bug me, even though I'm having fun. Let me realize it's a bad idea to go that way don't force me to go your way gamefreak >_<

If you're wanting to get a kid into RPGs they're probably the way to go. But they're not much of a game for people who are adults unless you're into the kind of markets those go far(which I am to some extent considering I grew up watching the stuff and enjoyed it then).

Pokémon is not too dissimilar from Dragon Quest in that sense. You have a reasonable expectation that if you liked one you'll like another random entry in the series and it sells itself a lot on its consistency and simplicity in the mechanics. What originally grabbed me was that the battle system is surprisingly deep, especially compared to many other RPGs. The story is pretty much an excuse plot, but there's something fun about adding new Pokémon to your team. The diversity lets you really build something around your personality, and the easier difficulty means you aren't punished for making sub-optimal choices.

Pretty much. My current team in Sun is laughable but it passes for what it is. I'm adding greninja to the lot once I get the approval to use him without him not listening since I know that much is true still. They changed a lot of mechanics, gyms don't even exist in this version. Daycares are nurseries that don't raise levels. They do still produce eggs though....

Got a PS4 yesterday and tried two RPG's.

First i started with bloodborne but i didn't get the best first impressions because i apparently managed to miss the weapon at the hunter's dream so i just aimlessly ran around the town trying find a weapon for 40 minutes until i gave up.

After that i tried witcher 3. Not much to say yet expect that at least in the beginning the monster feel like serious threat on death march difficulty. Even the lowliest monsters kill you fast if you are not careful.

Though i thing i need to mention that as a fan of the books i i don't really like the sort of "cool" cutscenes the game has. The books feel down to earth and the fights arent flashy like they are in most fantasy. I haven only seen clips from Game Of Thrones TV series but that seems the like of portrayal that i would have wanted to see here.

Not these video gamey sort of cutscenes.

I'm not saying that there arent any cool fightscenes in Witcher book series but they aren't portrayed in this sort of fashion.
