999 is an interesting story, told in a highly inconvenient manner, via a badly designed game. The only way to uncover all of said interesting story is to replay this game six different times. A slow text speed, no way to instantly skip previously read dialogue (you can speed it up a little), and having to redo puzzles you've already beaten over and over makes replays not much fun. The graphics are competent at best, the puzzles are totally simplistic, but the OST is above average. Honestly the fact that 999 is so highly lauded says more about the general lack of good writing in video games than anything else.
I managed to get the "true ending" on my second pass, thankfully. Maybe the remaster version will fix some of the problems I had with it, but personally I found the original 999 to be a bit overly lauded. That said, I bothered to buy the sequels to 999, so I must not have TOTALLY hated it. Hope you like Sudoku!
Thanks, Exhum. Hopefully they fix some of those things with the remaster... Especially the lack of text skipping which seems like a really odd omission to me
Apparently the iOS version had a flowchart which let you skip around to different points in the game, so maybe the remaster will have that at least?
IMO, the text skipping isn't the worst part - it does do the typical VN fast-forward until you hit new dialogue thing, so while not ideal it does help. It's more the replaying everything that really slows it down. I actually 100%'ed that game, and it got quite tedious . The sequel has a flowchart system as well though, so it makes me think it's something they acknowledged as a weakness and addressed.

Allow me to be the voice of dissent to his voice of dissent. I beat 999 this year and loved it:

You can speed through the text once you have read it at least once, which really doesn't add too much more time to the overall process. It is the having to re-do puzzles that you've done before that is a pain, but obviously once you've solved it once, that doesn't take too long. The flowchart style you mention is available in the sequels, so yeah, hopefully they give you some of those quality of life fixes in Nonary Games.

If the navigation for replays was more convenient, I would have enjoyed 999 more. It still had some major derp in its plot though, such as cribbing from Kurt Vonnegut's novel Cat's Cradle a little too blatantly. But hey 999 was a LOT better than Theresia, I'll readily admit that.

You should check out the sequel, if you haven't. It's a bit of a trade off IMO, because I feel like the style is better in the first one, but the quality of life improvements are super great.
I've not read the novel Cat's Cradle but I don't know if I would call that a derp, many things crib or pay homage to other works.

Nah the cribbing wasn't the derp part. A lot of the "plot twists" are what I found to be super derpy. I'm not in the mood to argue their merit with internet strangers again though. I've been down that road twice on other forums, nothing of value was gained. As I said earlier; I realize I'm in the minority thinking 999 is overrated. And that's fine. If we all liked the same things this place would be boring.
Give the game a shot laurenhiya21! I'd like to know your opinion.
If anyone's into eroge VNs, there's a site with a ton of them. There's an option to download them for free, but it's a pain in the ass and takes forever, so I threw a little money at them to save myself hours of waiting and a massive headache. If anyone wants to use my login, shoot me a PM, and I'd be glad to give you my username and password for the site.
