Alt-left I find like the alt-right has a range. You have the cranks who just want nothing but the most leftist agenda and won't waiver on it like your nutty Pelosi and bitchmouth old assholes like retiring Reid. Then you have the science, medicine, climate, and other anti-intelligent thought and process types as others listed in here (jill stein, greenpeace, peta, eco-terrorism, the safe space crazies and bullies, etc.) It's a thing, they're loud, overly radical, alarmist or downright offensive to people on both sides of the spectrum.

Didn't I link that Stewart piece days ago? It's fantastic.

Pelosi and Reid aren't alt-left. They are solidly traditional progressives.

Also, safe spaces are a real, and not crazy, thing.

Are you saying that science, medicine, and climatology are anti-intelligent? I'm confused by how you phrased things.

I'm saying some of them are just in it for their own panic based agenda, then you have the larger pool of moderates who base things in the right way and calmly to make a point without coming off as a crank or militant and forceful.

Ex: Greenpeace... solution to their problems, buy an ice cutter and ram it into a boat to make a point. Wrong way.

I might be more prone to agree with you if your concern was over pseudosciene rather than science (pseudoscience uses scientific jargon, but lacks the rigor of well-tested science) and alternative medicine rather than medicine (alternative medicine, by definition, is medicine that either has not yet been proven to work, or has been proven not to work).

I disagree with calling climatologists alarmist. They are just presenting their data, and making the logical conclusion that their data should lead to alarm. Calling them alarmist is like getting mad at your fire detector for being so loud when your house is actually on fire.

Actual science, medicine, and climatology are all intelligent.

I get your concern about violent and destructive methods of protest though.

The problem with the term alternative medicine is that it is used inconsistently. Music and creative arts therapies, for example, are allied medicine but commonly and mistakenly lumped in with alternative medicine. And acupuncture, while no better than placebo, is still effective (placebo acupuncture was effective as well) at treating some conditions like back pain. So we do have to be careful with labeling and mislabeling.

I'm wondering if I can come up with some packaging that would let me legally sell sugar pills as medication by referring to them as placebos in the right way.

I don't have issue with science or climatologists, just like I don't have an issue with save the whales types, but both run the spectrum from being logical, calm, and instructive, then you have the other end which are trolls, fear mongers, alarmist and other cranks who say more than what is reasonable to screaming in peoples faces and causing actual damage to make a point (ie: eco-terrorists.) As maru said, with medicine there's a mix of usefulness and not so it gets tricky calling out all of it crap.
