World is Falling Apart Thread (Locked forever)

Were the signs there before the election, or did the signs and the display pop up after the election? I know there was a guy somewhere who was flying a Nazi flag, but he was flying it as part of an anti-Trump sentiment.

No, unfortunately in this case the signs were there prior to the election Sarge.Sarge wrote:Were the signs there before the election, or did the signs and the display pop up after the election? Honestly, I don't want to be a jerk laying this at anyone's feet. I just have to worry more about the young children who see all the racial tensions on the news and used to live in a peaceful integrated community, and now have to walk past this garbage on the way to the bus stop.
What message is being sent to them? Things like this don't get reported, it's free speech. How prolific is this movement when you take into account non-violent acts of hate? What kind of impact will it all have on race relations moving forward? These are legitimate concerns that I'm just fed up with having to defend.
Whatever the individual reasons for each voter ended up being, the collective impact was that of setting us back on equality. Is a black or Muslim person equal to you when you may walk down the street freely without fear of being stopped and frisked in public simply for being yourself? Is a gay person equal when you have no fears of having your rights to be married taken away? Is a woman equal when she watches a likely sex offender and definitely misogynistic man take the white house? What about the Hispanic community, are they equal?
How far back should we take this immigration issue? I mean technically we are all immigrants. It seems to be working out just fine until it stops working out for a certain demographic and then it is no longer "OK".
Re: So the whole world is kind of falling apart...
Very sad. Hope someone can talk to them and maybe get their mind right.

There's no way to make this not sound trumpy rotten, but when you ask about how will race relations look going forward perhaps we should step back to the 90s or even the earlier 00s? In the last ten years the vocal minority leftist wing of the DNC has done their damnedest in the name of making everyone feel fairly treated, even, and all the rest, made a very large population feel that they're not even, they're not valued, that they need to be diminished to lift up other groups of people. That is not how you properly do things but it was done.jp1 wrote: What message is being sent to them? Things like this don't get reported, it's free speech. Places that would never usually vote for the GOP candidate did, and a big swath of those people are blue collar workers, majority of them by far being white men and women. People being tired of told they are white so they have it better off, that they have privilege, that they don't deserve X Y Z type of public assistance in some form or another because of their skin.
Now you have a guy like Trump coming in who may or may not be a racist bigoting piece of shit who didn't dissuade pissed off white people (racists, closet racists, or not) who felt fucked over by the party that used claim to back them for decades. I don't think the left deserves the right at this point to play the race relations moving forward card.
By their own actions it set the ball rolling to set them back decades in some aspects and this shitty behavior you're seeing now is a very visible venting from a pissed off group of people who are being childish, or really are racists as they're tired of being stepped on. Perhaps had the left found a way to uplift minorities and women while not doing it where it looks to be (or has been) a middle finger to white blue collar no/some college type citizens Hillary would be rolling into office in a couple months right now.

As for the rest, I'm not sure I can agree with that. I believe you have a point about what has people bitter, I just don't really agree they deserve to be. Lifting up some people so they can have the same opportunities as everyone else is inevitably going to make the job market more competitive. Now, perhaps these people that are used to fighting that much harder have the upper hand because of a now level playing field. Does that give them an advantage over you as a white male? Possibly, but it is an advantage they have earned, and more importantly it is an advantage you have enjoyed previously.
There has to be a period of transition to get the ball rolling. So, when affirmative action comes along you see it as an attack on white people. In reality it is an effort to erase the discrimination that these people face every day of their lives, and in doing so offer them a chance to lift themselves up.
You hear from the right all the time that the lower class or the poor are just lazy, they don't want to work, etc... Ignoring how hard it is to enter a competitive market at a significant disadvantage. Then when they do start getting the jobs and excelling at them, they are stealing "our" work. Which is it?
You cannot lift someone out of the gutter without offering them a hand up. I guess fundamentally this is were Libs and Conservatives differ, because I don't believe social services are in place to allow people to live the american dream without working. They protect children growing up in these poor environments and give people who aren't being paid a living wage an opportunity to better themselves. The ones who abuse it still live in poverty despite the Right's assertion that they are eating steak and shrimp every night.
My sister is disabled. She can barely afford to eat the cheapest shit they sell and pay her bills. She was born having seizures that caused brain damage, doesn't she deserve to live a life? I have countless examples of relatives, friends, or loved ones, some that include people who have taken advantage of the programs offered to them because of their race and made it through college with a degree so they aren't living on assistance any longer. You can't pick and choose which you want, if you do away with all of it...ultimately, you are making people disposable.

You and me both Sarge. I would love to make that effort, but I don't think I would make much headway. I have certain proclivities that would make my intervention counterproductive. Perhaps our police department will have a talk with them and try to dissuade them from keeping it up.Sarge wrote:Very sad. Hope someone can talk to them and maybe get their mind right.

Re: So the whole world is kind of falling apart...
I guess I missed it when Trump said; "Set up lynching effigies in your front yard." Or; "Hey go beat up on minorities in my name." I just don't recall him saying that.
I remember him saying illegal immigration was a bad thing, and that illegal immigrants should be held to the standard of law, and that accepting immigrants from terrorist harboring nations needs to be implemented via a vetting process. I recall those things.
I also recall him recently saying on 60 minutes, that these bigotry incited crimes were not okay with him. Actually he directly looked into the camera and said:

He didn't even wink when he said it.

And yet, the surge of hate crimes following Trump's election is even greater than the surge of hate crimes following 9/11. Forgive me if I find it hard to not draw a connection between his campaign rhetoric/policy proposals and the vindication that the perpetrators of these hate crimes are feeling following his election.
You all can keep trying to explain away racism or ignore it, but it's just like trying to ignore the malignant tumor on your back and tell yourself it's "probably just a mole." No amount of ignoring and relabeling is going to change what it is.

You'll forgive me if I take the SPLC's and CAIR's statements with a huge grain of salt.
