Perfectly honest usually I throw out I hate these games because the AI always seems to have some gimped up favoritism for it that drives me nuts, that or you can't get smart with it because if you deviate from the designers plans you're boned.

But the truth is there have been a very narrow few I do like enough to at least put many hours into it, even if theres no way in hell I'll ever finish the stuff.

-Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen (have the cart still)
-Nectaris(Military Madness)
-Advance Wars 1 (GBA)
-Shining Force (GG (I think, recently got it so not into it yet)
-Final Fantasy Tactics Advance version

I suck at the stuff without a guide after about 1/2 the stages, but I do find the stuff engaging if the mood is there. I prefer direct control like a RTS or RPG has but those I can deal.

SRPG's are my favorite genre, and the one game I love that doesn't get a lot of love elsewhere is Vanguard Bandits. Working Designs characters with mech combat.

Ok, like I said, perhaps my favorite genre of games. Here are the games I have beaten, some of them multiple times.

Banner Saga
Fallout Tactics
FF Tactics
FF Tactics A1
FF Tactics A2
Fire Emblem Awakening
FE Path of Radiance
FE Radiant Dawn
FE Shadow Dragon
FE Sacred Stones
Front Mission 4
Kartia
Luminous Arc
Ogre Battle MotBQ
Shining Force
Shining Force 2
Shining Force 3 Sc 1
Shining Force CD
Tactics Ogre LUCT
Tactics Ogre KOL
Vandal Hearts
Vandal Hearts: FOJ
Wasteland 2
XCOM Enemy Unknown & Within

Of these, my favorites are the Ogre Battle series and Shining Series. I also enjoy the Fire Emblem games, with the console releases as my favorites due to them having a decent story. Tactics Ogre LUCT is perhaps the pinnacle for me. All of these are good to great, but I would say Kartia, Luminous Arc, and Vandal Hearts FOJ are average at best.

I love games where I can customize and build a well rounded crew as opposed to focusing on just a few characters. Games like TO, OB, and Xcom scratch that itch.

Those I have played and put a good bit of time in but not quite finished:
Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits
Banner Saga 2*
Dark Wizard*
Disgaea 1
Disgaea 2
Fire Emblem (first on GBA localized)*
Fire Emblem Fates*
Front Mission DS*
Gemfire*
Gladius*
Growlanser Generations*
Growlanser Heritage of War
Growlanser Wayfarer of Time*
Hoshigami
Langrisser 2*
Ogre Battle 64*
Record of Agarest War
Rondo of Swords*
Shadowrun Returns*
Spectral Force 3
Stella Deus
Suikoden Tactics*
Vandal Hearts 2
Warsong*
Xcom 2*
Yggdra Union

Starred games are those I for sure liked and would want to keep playing to finish.
Some of these games I am surprised I hadn't finished or thought I had. I am actively playing Xcom 2, so that should join the completed pile soon. The fact I haven't beaten OB64 is a crime to me, a really good game. I also really love Banner Saga, and havent really scratched the surface much of 2 yet, I need to dig into that one.

Stella Deus I remember being very bland, the Disgaea games are way too much. I have a love/hate with that series. I like the customization options and the endless possibilities, but they are too endless, and almost too pointless.
I like the Growlanser games, despite not beating one, yet Heritage of War I remember being of low quality.

I would say Spectral Force 3 is the worst on this list. The only game I consciously stopped playing due to it just being bad. Most of the others some other game ended up distracting me. Hoshigami is close, I remember just getting bored of it.

Great read Jmustang1968!

Considering your knowledge of the genre, I'm taking that mention at heart. When the SRPG itch hits me again, I will be playing TO:LUCT.

Also, man, you've gotta check out the Valkyria Chronicles series. Even if you don't care for the plots, the BLiTZ combat system is amazing. The first game is widely considered the best, and is available on PS3, PS4, and PC now. And maybe even other formats? But yeah, if you love SRPG, you owe it to yourself to at least play through the first game.

I keep forgetting that game exists. Just put the PSN version on my PSP though. Thanks for reminding me! 8)

Final Fantasy Tactics definitely inspired a lot of spinoffs (even if it was itself a spinoff). One I remember, but never played enough to determine how good it actually was, is Saiyuki: Journey West. Most of the publications at the time seemed to like it alright, anyway.

Definitely go PSP on Tactics Ogre. That's what I hear, anyway. Less grinding.

Yeah it's surprising how many people think Tactics Ogre copied Final Fantasy Tactics, when in reality the opposite was true.

SRPG/TRPGs are games I seem to rarely finish. The number I've abandoned halfway through is probably significantly greater than the ones I've actually finished. From memory, I've played a considerable amount of:

Ogre Battle: MotBQ
Tactics Ogre: LUCT
Disgaea
Suikoden Tactics
Front Mission 4
Terra Phantastica
Shining Force
Shining Force II
Shining Force III: Scenario 1
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo

and if they count:

Advanced Wars 2
Advanced Wars: Dual Strike
Dragon Force

I feel like I'm forgetting a few, but of those, I've only beaten Dragon Force, Shining Force/II, Terra Phantastica, Disgaea, and Ogre Battle. Terra Phantastica was probably my favorite, with Disgaea behind that. Dragon Force was also really good.

I have quite a sizeable collection of games in this sub-genre; It would be a real shame if it turned out that I actually don't like this style of game.

Have you played the original Tactics Ogre (or Let Us Cling Together)? And if so, how do you think it compares?

I was wondering how I'd never heard of that. Turns out it's one of the many many Japanese only Saturn RPGs that remain untranslated. Gameplay looked solid from the Youtube footage I watched.

I also like the cover art:

I'm kinda surprised XCOM is considered an rpg. I just finished XCOM 2 (which was outstanding, everyone should play that) and other than soldiers ranking up I didn't really get an rpg vibe.

I'm not arguing against it, just interested.
