I started playing Magicool (I refuse to spell it "Magicoal") yesterday, and I think I'm somewhere around a third of the way through it. It's a relatively simple ARPG, but with a couple things that make it a little different: There are two spell casting main characters that are always on screen--but switching between control of the two is a bit of a pain--who have four slots each for equipping spells and items; Each spell has a charge time before the hitbox is generated, and it's different for each one; Spells are found as drops from enemies, talking to NPCs, etc. I've missed a bunch of spells already because some of them appear to be very tricky to acquire, or involve doing things that I just wouldn't think to do.

It plays pretty well, but combat can feel a little spastic at times with how quickly the PCs and enemies move around. "Airborne" enemies can also have different planes to their movement, and can't be hit by certain attacks when not near the ground. It's a very nice looking game graphically, with story cutscenes between areas. It's very very linear, though. Not that that's bad, per se, but it does make all the miss-ables a bit annoying.

The one thing that really stands out about the game is the soundtrack:

I've already ripped all of the tracks from the CD, but unfortunately, there are only a handful up on youtube.

Sounds rad brotha.

Funny you mention that game - I beefed up my PCE Want List the other day and that was one of the games I added. Looks super cute. I am wary about the fact that I can't find a walkthrough online though...

Have there been any PCE games that have been fan translated?

Thanks man, for the life of me I could not think of the name of that site! Any of those that you personally suggest?

Soon Xanadu and Xanadu II will have a high-quality translation with voice acting. Cyber Knight is also being translated.

As far as action-RPGs go you really can't beat the Ys and Xak games.
