Also drones are being used to fly in contraband. No matter how tall "the wall" is, a drone can fly right over it.

Constructing a giant border wall would be a colossal waste of money if the goal is to halt illegal immigration. Over half of illegal immigrants enter the country legally and overstay their visas, and very few enter the U.S. by making a mad dash across our border with Mexico. Moreover - as Exhuminator noted - it is likely noted that people will quickly find a way to circumvent it.Exhuminator wrote:And what kind of a wall fights a good underground tunnel?Tanooki wrote:what kind of fence fights some good bolt cutters?
I'll admit the whole wall thing never made much sense to me. Increased and more vigilant border control, with automated surveillance systems for even the most remote areas makes a lot more sense.
If, however, the goal is quieting people who have been droning on and on about it as some sort of panacea for our immigration issues for the past 20+ years, then I am all for it. At the very least it's a public "art/infrastructure/vanity" project that will inject some money into the economy.

I dunno about that, I hear the German's weren't overly fond of theirs. They knocked it down, or something like that? I think it's pretty famous.prfsnl_gmr wrote: If, however, the goal is quieting people who have been droning on and on about it as some sort of panacea for our immigration issues for the past 20+ years, then I am all for it. Even better! Then, we can sell the pieces in souvenir shops for a few years for even more money!alienjesus wrote:I dunno about that, I hear the German's weren't overly fond of theirs. EDIT: Also, we can get The Scorpions and David Hasselhoff to write songs about it! So much money!!!

It wasn't all that effective in China, either.alienjesus wrote:I dunno about that, I hear the German's weren't overly fond of theirs. They knocked it down, or something like that? I've always thought there was a better approach to illegal immigration than building a wall, too: smack the heck out of employers that employ illegals. Make it so punitive that they won't even think about doing it. Then those that have come illegally will self-deport. Those that wish to come back can do it the right way.

True, they weren't. But that wall divided its own country in half based on political ideology, which is a bit different than a wall separating one country from another's illegal immigrants and drugs.alienjesus wrote:I dunno about that, I hear the German's weren't overly fond of theirs.

Have you seen Monsters? It is an OK horror/kaiju film...and the totally awesome wall in that movie didn't work. (Well, it didn't keep out the titular monsters.) The giant "infected zone" separating Mexico and the U.S. didn't entirely stop the flow of people either:Michi wrote:It wasn't all that effective in China, either.

If that won't do it...

The way you deal with drugs is that first offense for any possession is that you deep fry the perp. Suddenly getting high isn't worth the alternative.Exhuminator wrote:True, they weren't. That just raises the risk / cost of product. The Philippines are basically doing this exact policy and they still have not run out of dealers or addicts.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
