Trails of Cold Steel - yeah......I just got my ass handed to me on a silver platter by Sara. I knew she was going to duel against Jusis and Machias but didn't expect to get roped in on that one. That was literally scary since I didn't expect her weapons and my jaw dropped seeing those. Why couldn't there be a way to beat that? *sigh*

with Tyranny coming out tomorrow, I'm gonna have to decide if I can hold off on that one to continue playing Skyrim.

Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure

Image

I put two hours into this on PSP and I think I'm done. I can understand why some people enjoy it, don't get me wrong. It's not a terrible game or anything. It's just obviously an action adventure aimed at young kids (specifically girls). And that'd be fine, if only the gameplay were more challenging and diverse. Nope. Gurumin is super easy with very basic game design. You spend all your time pressing X against nonthreatening enemies, while mindlessly collecting coins from breakable objects. I know a lot of people can look past that banality, because they enjoy the cutesy charm and Saturday morning plot. And hey, if that works for you, more power to ya. But this game is just too easy, boring, and simple for me to sink another seven hours of my life to beat it. (Also the camera sucks ass and I'm tired of fighting with it.) On the other hand, if my daughter were still a seven year old I'd hook her up with this in a heartbeat.

So it's a "Kid's first RPG" kind of situation? That's cool. Glad to know there are still easy ways into this genre.

Yeah it's definitely a stepping stone for a kid to get into more complex action-RPGs. We're talking Mystic Quest type situation here. And that's A-OK, 'cause I'm not saying these kinda games shouldn't exist as gateways. But for a grizzled old bastard like me it's no E ticket.

I'm kinda glad things like that exist though, even if they are really bizarre and strange for that same reason. Maybe there should be a topic/article on here dedicated to those, that would be interesting to see what's out there in terms of "entry level" rpgs.

Perhaps.

On the flip side, my first JRPG was Phantasy Star, when I was ten years old. I loved it, and I beat it that same year without needing a walkthrough or strategy guide. My point there is not that I was such an amazing young gamer, rather that watering things down for kids isn't necessary.

True I can agree to that....I think my first though had to be either pokemon or something bizarre I can't even remember now as it's been so long ago now. I'm at the point that if and when I have kids they'll probably be raised on the like of SNES and PSX level rpgs since I love those(despite the fact I've never really beat them, I'm working on it though) and they are simply beautiful and amazing. I just wish on the note of those rpgs that it was possible to extract the saves and go back and forth between using say a 3ds and retron5/retrode2. Then maybe I would embrace digital every so slightly(especially if nintendo gets up on the times with cross-buys on VC games...
