Is the PS2 Grandia 2 THAT much worse than the DC version?

Post by Flak Beard »

I played this game a few years back on DC and want to play it again. I don't have my Dreamcast anymore, so I was going to pick up the PS2 version for $10 or so. I've heard it's inferior to the DC version by many gamers, but in what ways? Bugs and glitches? Graphics?

Is it still worth getting it or is it a far less enjoyable experience on the PS2?

Slow down, and when I say slow... SLOOOOOWWWWWW. Like literally sometimes it drops to half the speed of the dreamcast. Which is sad.

There are other technical glitches... and poorer quality graphics.

Slow down is right. I also saw the character Roan(or i think that was his name.....) glitch pretty bad in battles. Sometimes his textures would just disappear and he would be nothing but white polygons running around. The worst glitch i saw was getting stuck between 2 rocks and having no choice but to load my last save.

I know a lot of people seem to rip on it, but for the record, I played through it on the ps2 and didn't seem to have any problems

you can tell they put much more effort into the DC version. I recall reading an article where they kinda admitted they the DC version was superior.

will the average person notice? prolly not.

but i would rather play it on the DC for more reasons than quality.

I really enjoyed Grandia 2, and I played the PS2 version. Yeah, it had some issues, but there wasn't anything that I thought really detracted from the game. That being said, I never played the DC version. Maybe if I had played both versions the differences would be much more noticeable.

A lot of people don't realize that the PS2 was actually less powerful than the Gamecube, and significantly less than the Xbox, and some may even argue that the Dreamcast was also more powerful due to the relatively very easy development tools and fast hardware/GD-Rom load times compared to DVD's. Certain games did run much better on the DC than the PS2, and I have noticed some serious oversights and bugs in the PS2 version.

I'm not a hardcore player, nor do i notice minor details, but the ps2 version even in the real time rendered cut scenes was significantly slower, and choppier than the pc version. I didnt' get far in the ps2 version because the quality was that much worse.

I'd say just put down the $20 for a Dreamcast and burn Grandia 2 for it (http://snesorama.us/board/showthread.ph ... &no_cj_c=0). That's basically the same price as Grandia 2 on the PlayStation 2, except you get access to about 98% of the Dreamcast's library. Seems like a better deal to me, unless you have inhibitions about burning games.

The pirated copy sucks. It was split to two discs, and all the spell effects got horribly compressed. I think a lot of music was monoized too. At that point, the PS2 version is the better option.
