Y'know, if some third party group could get up the money for licensing, true blue compilation releases such as this could be a great boon, both for gamers and potentially for these companies. Looking at some of the things I've seen pop up in the VC releases or just generally elsewhere, there's a large market for games unreleased in certain territories or with extremely high prices for the original game. Mix that with being legal and all, and that could be a great deal.
But... licensing. That'd be an issue.

@noise I get that, but it's just bizarre they don't do both...those of us on the real systems would go for it in a heart beat...

Serious answer that isn't related to that dead anchor the WiiU (or 3DS too, or NX.)
Make the same system they did now, but be lying to us about how the guts work, and allow that flashable memory within to be expanded with more games. Think Neo-Geo X with the added 16 expanded games over 4 cards. Have a little mini cartridge kind of like those flip stick credit card like USB cards Indiebox uses, but instead it jacks into controller port 2 on the NES Classic and flashes another set of 10, 20, 30 NES titles to the thing.
I'd really like that, and then a follow up with the SNES, GB/GBC, and out from there as possible.

Nope, it's all about the tiny plastic case this emulator box comes in and the controller for menoiseredux wrote:serious question for those of you who are excited about this thing but also own a Wii U: Would you be happier if instead of this new stand-alone device, Nintendo had released a Wii U disc with all these games on it, and a compatible NES controller for the Wii U?

The only reason I want to get the NES Classic is for convenience of portability.
Re: NES Classic
I like the idea of the compactness for portability and that case is a great idea. On the other hand, the HDMI only output of the NES Classic wipes out as a PlugNPlay for universal to any TV or portable screen. The HDMI ports on the TV are not near as durable as RCA jacks, the continual unplugging/plugging will eventually damage the tiny pins.Ziggy587 wrote:The only reason I want to get the NES Classic is for convenience of portability.

Re: NES Classic
I'd be all for having one though if they at least made it to where they had tiny cards of some sort that allowed for expanding the amount of games that's in it. i can't honestly imagine that many devs would or wouldn't jump on that though...

May need to see what output modes it supports, since HDMI would work for a lot of the screens targeted at portable or integrated use these days. Not for legacy stuff of course, but there are a fair number of LCDs around that have micro HDMI and USB power as well. If it can only do 720/1080p though, that'd be limiting.CRTGAMER wrote: I like the idea of the compactness for portability and that case is a great idea. Tec-Toy has the right idea, by remaking the Official Sega Genesis:

Re: NES Classic
Well Nintendo at times like to blow smoke, this time I doubt they are as they are also cheap. But, a system like that is, those ports on the front could plausibly used to carry data. Internally it has some writable storage that allows the games to be put there by them, and then by the user their save data too. It would not be too much of a stretch to think if they were to be lying and wanted to profit more, one could see them sell expansion mini-cartridges at retail with another 10, 20, 30 games on it (1st/3rd party mix) in volumes much like the neo-geo x had on those added cards.
It would be a pretty smart stunt, far cheaper on them to do that than make a volume 2 console if it were to end up ragingly popular.
