[quote]don't understand the Myst phenomenon at all. Be it the original game, Riven, or the latest in the series known as Exile[/quoteJ
Just the beginning of the review and already the review is off to a bad start. The obvious mistake is saying Riven is the original when the original was Myst. Riven was the sequel. Might not be a big deal but when you get payed to review games a little research is pretty much mandatory.
But i'll admit to not liking the myst games at all but at least im not writing reviews about them
"whats the difference between a 9.8 and a 10? does that .2 really make that much difference?"
Not really. And if you listen to IGN's gamescoop or other editorials there they usually say they don't even take the decimals that seriously. But if you ever look at the comments under a game review. . . oh my god. WHY DID THIS GET A 9.8 WHEN THE OTHER VERSION GOT A 9.7???? Or, HOW DID HALO GET A 9.7 WHEN IN THE REVIEW OF RESISTANCE THEY SAID IT WAS BETTER THAN HALO BUT IT GOT A 9.6? People really don't understand that different people write different reviews and that there's no absolute number to represent a game. That's why there's a text review to go along with the number. . .

If I see a review that uses the phrases "unforgiving difficulty" and "hardcore flavor" in a review of a dungeon crawler, it means that the game is probably going to get a low score, but I'm going to enjoy it. The trick is to learn how to interpret the language they use.
Very true. I would of never picked up Nightmare of Druaga if I had gone with the scores it got. It's right up my alley, but got kicked around by the "professionals".
I let my eyes and ears be the review these days. I try stuff out at friend's houses, get a hold of demos, test out roms/burns first if possible or sometimes just take a chance if the game is cheap enough.

then why have the decimals? If they don't take their own reviews seriously why should we take them seriously. Also I meant the review score as a final verdict of course they should talk about the game and what they like and what they don't like about it.

Yeah, same here. To shamelessly quote Captain Barbosa "The pirates code is more like a set of guidelines than actual rules." Kinda the same thing for me, except I feel that way about game reviews.

I think you're misintrepreting. He's saying whether it's the original game (Myst), the second game (Riven), or the latest (Exile).

It's funny, on every other forum I've ever been on people always seem to think IGN is some shining god of video game reviews that cannot have it's iron will challenged by anyone except the blasphemers. Just another reason I love Racketboy!
