Re: What are you listening to at the present? (genres helpfu
I thought that even some of you non-jazz fans would have an interest in this:

The only thing of real note this week for me is Beyond Now the new album by Donny McCaslin. I'll be honest, I had no idea who this guy was a year ago. But McCaslin and his band will now forever be part of a certain special history: for they were the band that made up David Bowie's final album, the very jazz influenced Blackstar which dropped almost immediately before his unexpected death. While I still find Blackstar rather hard to listen to because of all the sadness associated, I have to praise the band that helped shape it into the somber masterpiece that it is. So I'm definitely excited to hear what McCaslin and his band are moving on to next. Perhaps not surprisingly this one includes two Bowie covers.

Been listening to Dance Gavin Dance's new album "Mothership".
It has a different tone from the last two albums, not sure how I feel about it yet. Hard to believe this band has got seven albums under the belt and I've been with them since the second one. I honestly didn't think they would last this long. I'm glad they have though

Decided to hit the "I'm feeling lucky" on Google Play and what I got was rather....interesting:

Utada - Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

High and Mighty Color - Fly me to the other moon

Yoko Takahashi - A Cruel Angel's Thesis
I'm happy with that but super bizarre it's only playing j-pop/rock

More J-pop:
Ookami - Sachi Tainaka
Superflat - Part II : Rin
Kuchibiru Motion - Puffy AmiYumi
Primary - Rrutia
Find the Light - World Order
Contradiction - Momoiro Clover Z
Kizune - Kousuke Atari
Honey - L'arc-en-Ciel
on and on - Utada
Loving this! Might see if there's a summer course or something I can do to take a few Japanese courses. I'm too accustomed to taking courses with instructors and I really feel like i need it if I'm ever going to learn the language...

I'm listening to the first track (Undestroyed) released by Free Salamander Exhibit. This is a new band that grew out of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, who are an art-metal force of hypnotic aggression. Free Salamander Exhibit has a similar sound to SGM, but they are missing their former female violnist/background-vocalist. I've seen Sleepytime Gorilla Museum live a number of times and they always take the audience on a memorable journey through weird places.
