Who else gets made fun of for being a video game geek?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Who else gets made fun of for being a video game geek?

Post by kingdomheights777 »

I get crazy looks from people when they hear that I love and collect video games. My office has a Street Fighter IV poster, a mario Plush doll and random Nintendo Power Posters, and I work with nothing but women lol. I wear video game shirts constantly , hats, whatever else lol. Just wondering if you guys hide it, or do you show your true colors proudly...

dude i dont know, but i also work with all women in a vet hospital. my wife and i have my coworkers and their bfs over often and my video game systems are a huge hit... not just with the guys, but with the girls as well. we usually have a pretty good time playing wii bowling, street fighter II, and seeing who can beat super mario brothers the fastest.

With women if it comes up Ill tell them about how I really like collecting etc. and most of them are cool with it. Most of my friends play lots of games and the ones that dont still retain intrest in multiplayer. I never really talk about my home life though, mainly cause it sucks fairly bad.

I find that I get more appreciation from people that I'm a game geek more then getting fun of. In fact, I love when people try making fun of me for it. At work I have miniature Halo vehicles, an original Nintendo Poster, a NES controller mint tin along with a red and green Mario mushroom holder. All of this is on my desk. To top it off, my screen savor is of a Pac Man game in action. People love stopping by my desk to see what news and I get asked for opinions on new games all the time.

Had I have not put any of that stuff on my desk; I probably would not have become friends with the guy in my parts department. He's the same age as me and is a massive game geek as well. He's the one who gave me my arcade unit as well as a ton of other stuff.

The more you show it off, the better you may relate to someone. If not, screw em.

Lets see... Science Teacher - Comic Book reader/fan/blogger - Video Game Fan (mostly retro)... yeah I get it from everybody.
My students at school think its funny that I am all of the above along with a workout-aholic, coach, and Cleveland Sports fan.
If there is a stereotype I fit it, if it can be ridiculed I have been.

Only when I go to game stores apparently.

I wear my gaming shirts, the few anime shirts I own, and con shirts, heck I even wear shirts for Susan G. Komen, and rarely get made fun of for them. But in game stores I get heckled for my choices often. Its funny, I was told I was a "noob" for buying a childish looking games like Dokapon Kingdom, but when I tell the guy I am currently playing through the Kings Quest games he has never heard of them...

When I was nearing the end of my 8th grade year, I was being constantly made fun of in my Biology class (teacher was in on it, but in a light-hearted manner compared to other students) because I was one of the gamers at my school. At the heart of the jokes was this girl, her name is Jessica Bass. She's got a pretty face and body, but most of the time she's got acne, and not to mention the most obnoxous southern voice and laugh I've ever heard.

The joke of the day was that when I transferred to my new school (the bigger one in my home town) that I'd get pushed around a lot and I'd be miserable no matter what I do. (That was a misconception too- I'm a pretty popular guy. But I always have one or two classes during the day where there's nobody to talk to, and that's when the freaks start coming out of the woodwork to dish out cheap jokes about me)

Flash-forward a year into the future. I'm just as popular at the new school, but I have no classes with Jessica. The only time I actually saw her when she wasn't on the bus is one day when I need to go to my locker. As I'm heading toward commons I pass her in the empty hall. She's bawling. I think she was carrying a Dean refferal slip. I never had a more heartless grin on my face than the moments after passing her.

My point is, even though I hate when people make fun of me, karma usually comes full circle and wins the fight for me- Jessica never saw me upset enough to lose the cool, bitter mood I'm always in. I got to see her cry, and I didn't have to say a word.

I almost never get made fun of for being a video game geek, although people do find my devotion to older games a bit confusing.

"Hey, Logan! Have you played Gears of War 2?"

"No, I don't have an Xbox 360. Have you played it? Is it any good? How's the story?"

"Oh, no Xbox 360. Does that mean you have a PS3 or Wii?"

"Actually, I don't have either. My girlfriend has a Wii, though. So about the only new games I've played are Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl, and Twilight Princess, but that was actually on the Gamecube, so--"

"Wait, I thought you played games alot."

"Oh, I do! All the time! But I mostly play the older ones. Genesis, Super Nintendo, PlayStation, Dreamcast-- that kinda stuff."

"But why? Those things are ancient!"

"Well it's like... instead of just liking music from this year, most people like music all the way back to the 60's, maybe even all the way back to classical. It's the same thing with games, y'know?"

"No it's not. Video games constantly improve. How good music is doesn't really depend on when it was made."

"The only thing that's really improved is graphics. Which are awesome, mind you, but they're not incredibly important. I pay attention to story-telling, imagination, and immersion. Plus my favorite company was Sega, and they're not really the same company they used to be, so it gets me less motivated about newer consoles."

"Dude, Sega sucks! That's why they don't make consoles anymore. Why do you like them? I'm glad Nintendo killed them!"

--Whole new can of worms.

But people for real ask me to bring my Dreamcast with me when my friends are hanging out all the time. A guy literally kissed me on the cheek when he saw that I'd brought Soul Calibur once.

So yeah, people really love Soul Calibur, House of the Dead 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Sega Rally 2, Dead or Alive 2, Outtrigger, Guilty Gear X, Ooga Booga, Confidential Mission, Under Defeat, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Daytona USA 2001, Metropolis Street Racer, Rez, Ikaruga, Power Stone 2, Cosmic Smash, and Crazy Taxi.

Yeah... I apologize for making this post so long. Sorry, Racketboy's bandwidth!!
