TMNT on NES is balls fucking hard, and it's 98% straight memorization. Zelda 2 took me a solid 2 or 3 weeks of playing legit 12 hours a day just about every day during the summer several years ago to get good enough at the combat, level up enough, and figure out everything I had to do and where to go. I NEVER plan to replay that game. Ever.

The first game that pops into my mind is...

Image

I bought my first Saturn used off eBay when I was in high school. A friend of mine gave me a disc only copy of Shining the Holy Ark and a Sega brand RAM Backup Cart. I got pretty far during my first playthrough, I think I reached the halfway mark. It was a challenging boss battle, and I think I was under leveled. I was at a save point right before the boss fight though, and the only way to back track to the overworld was through a rather long dungeon. I think that's why I stopped playing it.

Some years ago I made a second attempt, starting from the begging. I didn't get very far. I think I just wasn't in the mood for that type of game at the time, so I stopped playing it. I very much want to play through from start to finish one of these days. And I've been waiting for the Shining Force 3 fan translations to be 100% finished, so I have some Sega Saturning to do at some point.

Symphony of the Night

I couldn't imagine not finishing this game. This is one of those games that I just couldn't put down until I beat it. I lost count how many times I've played through the game from start to finish. My oldest save file has many hours logged on it, I was going for 100% item completion. I fire up that save file every once in a while and hunt for a few new items. One day I'll get it.

 I replay Zelda II every year or so. I've gotten to the point where I'm pretty good at the combat. There's some neat tricks that help with the Ironknuckles, mostly involving jumping slashes. There are also times where discretion is the better part of valor and you just need to ignore 'em! The blade-tossers, you just want to leave alone, and the horrible bird things in the Great Palace are ones where you just want to RUN RUN RUN.

As for games that I want to finish and never did, there are so many of them. So many I'm having a hard time remembering them all. I know that I want to finish Baldur's Gate II one day. I still haven't finished any isometric SRPGs, like Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics. I've also got a half-finished playthrough of the GBA Fire Emblem. Breath of Fire III is one I've got 30 hours into, but just tapped out. The 7th Saga is one that I've made a lot of progress on, but lost the save back in the day, and have several aborted attempts in recent years. I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones that come to mind now. I've got so many more in the backlog that I'd like to get around to, but I'm sure it won't happen within my lifetime. :(

Shining the Holy Ark is a good one. The second Saturn RPG I finished (the first being PDS).

Yeah there are some tricks to getting through Zelda II.

I find that the game can be made significantly easier by grinding a bunch early on and collecting all the one-ups before the final dungeon. Last time I beat the game I finished with 9 lives and only a couple of deaths total (and one of those was done intentionally to refill MP).

These guys aren't too bad in the rooms with all the blocks. The blocks can be cleared in a specific way so that Link can stand and slash the heads of the tossers without being at risk of damage himself. Thanks, NES Game Atlas!

But yeah, the ones near the elevators... Just run away.

Theres a good many games into the 21st century I have bought first or second hand and not finished, but I can not think of one I look back on and regret letting go because it would get boring, played out, bad mechanics, overly long, or just wasnt good enough to overcome distraction.

I can only really think of 2 titles and one I got in the 90s which is Chrono Trigger and I think the multiple endings were off putting. The other and it really just falls into being too long would be Dragon Quest IV as I love the smaller mini-RPG chapters but the 5th last one just drags.

Oh yeah...I need to beat those too. I had blocked them from my memory. Thanks, Bone...

My list for this would basically just be a bunch of shmups. I've beaten most games I've started, it's mostly just the toughest ones I need to finish off.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Both of those I've had growing up, got stuck at some point, and still haven't beaten yet. Plus both either now belong to my sister, or have gotten lost while moving at some point. Either way I really need to get my own copies and beat them sometime haha.
