Anyone know if the Retron 5 can detect bootlegs? My repro cart reads as "Unknown Cartridge"... Would be interesting to test out.

Are we ever going to see emulation for 128bit consoles or is this a thing that stopped wtih 16-bit consoles?

I know there are emulation efforts for DC, PS2, and Gamecube but I heard they were flawed and not a replacement for owning the real thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the Dreamcast has any copyright protection so it's probably really easy to just burn ISO's and play them on the hardware.

The Sega CD is like this as well.

Most people say the Dolphin emulator is far superior to the Gamecube and actually improved the Gamecube's legacy in the long run.

PSX/PS2 emulators are pretty good.

It's really only the Xbox that isn't easily emulated yet.

Well most games on xbox already have a PC version that can run on a 10 year old PC. DC emulation is on the same level as N64 i think, works good enough on most popular titles but is awful on the less popular stuff. You can burn CD's to play on the dreamcast but some games must fit on more than one CD in comparison of one GD rom.

I want emulation not for running burned ISO, it gives me much better clutter control. If I can emulate like 6 systems on 1 computer its better than hooking 6 systems, their controllers, wires, and game cartridges/cds . There is also the dying/malfunctioning hardware issue. Also emulation has benefits like save states.

The Wii is terrible at this, you got 5 component wires, 1 motion bar, Wiimote+nunchuck, the power cord... and if you wish the NGC controller too.

Is that horribly long install time a thing that all PS4 and Xbone physical games have? That's been one of my biggest reservations about adopting a PS4, because it's a real problem that I really don't see getting any better :/

I'm really just crossing my fingers that the Switch doesn't have this problem, although considering that that uses cards instead of Blu-rays, there's actually a glimmer of hope for that.

Threads you see in the discussion forum of every Steam game on launch day:
"Achievements?????"
"Trading cards?????"
And, if it's a visual novel,
"Is there an h-patch?????"

The Xbox One has legitimately offensive install times. They're legit like half an hour to install a game fully, and while it usually lets you launch the game at 30% or so, they often pull the shit that Gears of War 4 did where it lets you launch the game but won't let you actually do anything other than look at various progress markers until EVERYTHING installs (like 30 or 40 minutes later).

The PS4, on the other hand, does the bare-bones necessary installs first (usually within 30 seconds, 60 tops from my experience) and then lets you play while it installs in the background (the massive patches are an extra hassle, but that's the same on Xbox One). PS4 hands down takes the trophy for less infuriating installs. The way the system does is better than how the PS3 did it and not even in the same league as the torture of the Xbox One's install times.

^ That. The PS4 is generally very, very good about that (Kotaku tested some of the early titles here if you want examples). Patches can also usually be downloaded in the background and installed later, albeit without taking the game online (not an option if it's online-only). It's obviously not ideal if you're bringing home a stack of games and trying to jump between them every few minutes, but for a lot of use it's barely an issue. Even less so if you plan ahead a teensy bit and toss the disc in ahead of time.

Technically, the Xbox One allows for the same thing, but it's just not usually as well executed. I basically didn't play Halo 5 for a while after picking up the system and game due to it wanting a patch every other time I tried to start it. The Rare collection is similarly infuriating, since so many games in that will only want to install/patch when you go to try and play them.

The more annoying thing quickly becomes managing space, since the 500GB drives they originally shipped with get eaten up fast when even a smaller install is 15-20GB, and seeing 40-50GB+ isn't uncommon.
