Re: Anyone feel less effort/interest in portable systems?
I've always owned way more games for handheld systems than other stuff, and I'd say more than half of my gaming time is eaten up by handhelds. I like sitting not just on the bus or at school, but also just at my computer while I listen to podcasts/videos and play my 3DS or what have you. The production costs for a handheld game have just always been so much lower than their console counterparts, that's why we got so many weird, experimental games on the DS and to a lesser extent the GBA. I love that kind of stuff.

I grew up in the backseat as well. Game Gear was my go to choice during road trips when I was in elementary school. Plug that adapter into the cigarette lighter and off we went. I wasn't glued to the thing, because if we were out of the car, the rule was to be in the moment with what family was doing.
I eventually forayed into the Game Boy Color with Pokémon Red, Yellow, and Silver. My favorite had to be Oracle of Seasons, which I played on a long road trip with my dad on one of the best trips I ever had with him.
Same went for GBA, lots of great titles for road trips. I'd pick a game and play so far, then switch around. Advance Wars, FF Tactics, Mario, Castlevania.
DS/PSP were still great, but I was in college at that point and didn't always have the time to play on the road or in between classes.
I usually drive now wherever we go, so I don't handheld game as much. I still have around 10 games for each handheld I own. They're a great reminder of times I had with my family and I'll pick them up and play them from time to time.
I will say though that taking handhelds to cons like PAX is amazing. I used my 3DS there so much. Great time to bring a handheld like a 3DS.
