Just thought I'd share my progress!

My Dad came over last night and we worked on a brand new control panel to the wee hours of the morning. The overall result was excellent. The panel went from an old 3 button per player configuration to a 6 button per player, plus individual start buttons and a coin button. Brand new switchable 8 way joysticks were put in as well. The buttons and sticks were provided by my friend Tony and all the parts worked out nicely.



In order to construct the control panel, I used Microsoft Visio to construct the layout of the buttons and the panel to the scale of the word so it would provide as a template to cut the wood on. The button size provided to be a little inaccurate on the Visio side when it came to production time, but my Dad had no problem making manual adjustments on the fly.



After all the drilling we put in the buttons, did the wiring and after 7 hours we were set!



I can now play Street Fighter 3rd Strike and any other 6 buttons came with ease! The next portion that I’m going to fix up is the Aero Fighters Display. I’m going to get some new overalls for it, by combining the use of stuff from Ace and the oversize printer from work. Granted I can get permission to use it.

It would be cool to get art on the sticks/buttons that wraps around to the aero fighters marque. I haven't really seen anyone do that before.

Slick job with the console though. I've been thinking about a mame cab for a while and just haven't made the jump. The amount of work scares the hell out of me.

But it's a minor issue, at least. The work was very nicely done.

You know whats odd, I didn't notice it was orange till I took the picture and actually posted it on here. Both my Dad and I were looking at this thing under pretty bright lights, I have no idea how the heck we missed that.

I just ran down into the basement again to check it out. Its almost really hard to tell the difference unless you really really look at it. The flash is what shows what the real difference is, but now I understand how we missed it. Oh well, not a big deal for now, I can always get another red button.

Maybe I'm color blind...and so is my dad...it runs in the family?!!


I am taking out the Aero Fighters marque though and replacing it with something else. If it ends up the replacement doesnt look good I can always put it back.

You could alway test yourself for color blindness: (http://www.opticien-lentilles.com/dalto ... tonien.php) A few of those images look pretty close to the color of your buttons. And color blindness does run in the family.

Back on topic though, nice work. What material did you use for the surface of the control panel?

Hmmm I check it out and I have a 8 percent chance of color blindness. Thanks for that link!

As far as the control panel goes, I used a wood meant for cabinents and then used black leather looking contact paper I bought from Home Depot. It worked alot better then expected!

Make sure you give your dad a genuine "thank you" for his help. Most people's folks wouldn't have anything to do with this project!!

No worries, I did several times over. I think he really got a kick out of working on it with me. We don't get to see each other much as I'm always going out of town alot for work, so it was some father/son bonding time.

Plus he said himself that it reminds him of when I little and he use to take my little brother and I to the arcade every Wednesday to pound the crap out of some unsuspecting kids in Street Fighter 2. After the arcade he's always get me a hot dog and root beer from the A&W Hot Dog Stand.

Printed the replacement marque today at worked and put a black light in behind it. It turned out pretty awesome. I'll have to snap another picture shortly.
