What are the most musically ambitious 8-bit game songs?

Anything that is gaming related that doesn't fit well anywhere else

No US games used expanded audio because the US cartridge port doesn't have the audio pins.

This makes me sad. :(

Maybe I should finally get into imports.

Awesome! This list is super helpful. I was wrong in my earlier post. Gimmick! does have an extra chip, but the soundtrack I was thinking of was actually Langrange Point. The added chip in that game gave the composers 6 channels of FM synths. It sounds amazing! This is a soundtrack worth tracking down because it really doesn't sound like the NES at all. The added FM chip makes the NES sound more like a Genesis.

So everyone knows that the Final Fantasy music by Nobuo Uematsu is highly ambitious music, but have you ever heard the music on the MSX2 port of Final Fantasy? Tadahiro Nitta took the music compositions from the NES version and rearranged them with entirely different sound design for the FM chip on the MSX. It's really great to hear what these compositions sound like on a completely different chip set. For those who love that icy metallic sound of FM synthesis, this one is for you. :)

Yeah, if anyone wants the files you can get them here, which you can then use to mute the FM or the PSG to hear what is what.

Good collection of info right there and tie backs to youtube for example, just be sure those links don't fail since they're not all your own.

Might I suggest lining up stuff cleaner, clearer, and overall better in some areas.

The NES/FC one is a hot mess where it starts as a clickable list, then it gets into blobs of titles running together in large blocks with random links that work.

Why not collate a top 20 or so list of examples that you can click, then do an A-Z text list in order below. It took me awhile to find Castlevania 3 JP until I saw there was VRC6 section it was pushed into.
