No, no, no! There is still plenty of opportunity in this country, despite policies that keep us from being everything we can be. Play your cards right, and you can be the one making the money.

As for the 1%, just working hard and/or getting lucky doesn't make them all a part of some shadowy cabal. Sure, there are rich people that try to influence policy, but it's been that way since time immemorial. It's certainly more possible to join the ranks of the wealthy by merit than through most of human history, so don't let that get you down!

It may be more possible now-ish than in most of the past, but it's still not all that possible. You have to be hard-working AND lucky to succeed.

Oh, I'm not arguing that you'll end up mega-wealthy just through hard work, although it is almost a prerequisite (unless you're lucky enough to be born into wealth, and even that can fall if mismanaged). Some luck is most assuredly required.

However! Even if you aren't lucky, you can do quite well for yourself with hard work and a little bit of smarts. The majority of our populace in the US, even our poor, are far richer than much of the world.

This is in large part due to spending on social programs. And those nations that do more of that have even better results than we do.

I don't do too bad for myself; I consider myself quite blessed. Multi-millionaire? Nope. But pretty well off. I'm still pretty young, so I've got room for monetary growth if I can keep improving my skill set. I'm still livin' the dream, man. Livin'. The. Dream.

Even without the social spending, most of our poor would be pretty well off. Of course, I'm not arguing that we should stop all our social spending, but I do think we need to be smarter about it.

Currently at the easiest and the second highest paying job I've ever had, above what I was getting when I had a pharmacy technician license... yeah, the luck thing is definitely real.

Just keep on trekking and don't become too complacent. I went through a hellish year to end up where I am now, but I never would have gotten here if I didn't try and got away from previous toxic jobs.
