Dreamcast game reset issue (specifically Giga Wing)

Post by Ghudda »

So I have a modded Dreamcast that plays both NA and JP games. Every JP game I throw at it plays fine until today. I recently picked up a JP copy of Giga Wing and whenever I turn on my DC, it gets past the DC splash screen, gets to the SEGA splash screen, then the laser resets and it rinses and repeats (DC splash screen > SEGA splash screen > Reset). The console never power cycles completely, but the screen goes black and you can hear the laser re-position itself. Anyone have any idea what would cause this? This isn't the power reset issue that people get when the metal contacts aren't properly connecting to the power board, it's something else. Does Giga Wing have any sort of special security measures going on that prevent it from booting on another BIOS?

Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: It's worth noting that it seems to play audio tracks under the Dreamcast CD Player, but won't boot the actual game.

Yeah, I could try that, but I'm not sure what it would accomplish. I also have tried booting it with my JP Dreamcast (un modded), and I have the same results, so it seems like it's an issue with the disc itself. It's really hard to search for this problem online, since 99% of the results are the power-related reboot issues, where the power board isn't making making proper connection. Any other ideas? Everything else I throw at this DC works fine. It's just Giga Wing that's putting up a fuss.

I'll most likely return the copy to my LGS, but wanted to see if anyone had any advice before I do so. I don't see any signs of disc rot, etc. I dont know if this disc was resurfaced at one point or another, but it looks real clean.

It's probably a disc issue. I have a similar problem with my Shenmue discs on one of my Dreamcasts. Those systems just seem pretty finicky every now and then regardless.

Yeah, I went ahead and returned to my LGS. Not working on two separate consoles was enough for me to be sketched out. It's so weird that the disc could look so clean, yet it couldnt be read. Again, maybe it had been resurfaced in the past and I just don't know it. Makes me want to go through my entire DC library to check for additional duds. At least check my most valuable games. Makes me think twice about collecting disc based games .

Dreamcasts in particular are weird. I have had a system read one game fine and another system refuse to boot (as the one game it won't read).
There could be other issues at work than the disc though. The power connector could be dirty (a common issue when getting GDEMU to function, but I wouldn't discount running discs either). The aging GD-Rom laser could also be having issues with certain games.
And maybe it really was just a bad disc. Hard to say anymore.

I also really don't think most console companies (outside Nintendo maybe) meant for game systems to last this long. A lot of my gaming focus has been in fixing (researching more like  ) or re-purposing (more preferable) the systems for alternative use.
...just another lost soul...
