Seems to me that article on the device is just crying about nitpicky garbage. So what, the cord is 3ft. If that's such a huge burden, there are after market extension cables with those wii jacks on them aren't there? That should probably double or likely triple the length. I'll give him to a point the home button, seems kind of dumb, but they were shooting for 'appearances accuracy' on the form factor but a button shortcut (like Gameboys press all 4 buttons to reset) would have been a nice option.
Beyond that it really probably if that's the best of the complaints really has no flaw but does have some visual advantages and saving (states) too we didn't know about already. They pointed out a 60% savings on the Wii price of the NES-VC titles so that's a plus for anyone into the things.
NES Classic
Re: NES Classic
I pre-ordered mine months ago after it was announced and I think the site I used sold out a few days after I pre-ordered.
How come the US hasn't had pre-orders yet?

Sounds like you've never used the original model Famicom because that shit is annoying. You just don't know how much until you actually experience it. You have like 1 cubic foot in which you can safely use the controller. Want to lean back on the couch? Nope, can't do it without yanking the console with you. Want to stretch? Nope, gotta pause and put the controller down first. In the middle of playing and have to scratch your nose? Nope, can't do that with out yanking the console around. It's very annoying being locked into a sitting position.
Yes, I believe extension cables are available. That's the first thing I thought of after reading about the wire length, but, it kinda sucks that you have to purchase something in addition to the console (and I say HAVE to because I really feel like it's absolutely necessary if you want to enjoy using the thing).
Then there's the other problem with the controller wire length... Requiring the console to be VERY CLOSE to where you're sitting means you will need a rather long HDMI cable. If this thing is bundled with an HDMI cable, I doubt it any longer than 6' (if it's that long). The standard HDMI cable length is about 6' long, usually less. I doubt anyone reading this has an HDMI cable longer than that. Think about how far away a 6' cable would reach coming out the BACK of your TV (because HDTVs don't have front HDMI ports). Most American living-rooms are not set up in a way that this will work out. You'll either be forced to buy a rather long HDMI cable so you can keep the base console close by, or you'll be forced to buy an extension cable for the controller. Either that, or you'll have to move a chair close by to your TV and steam over the fact that you'd rather be sitting on your lovely couch (not to mention it'll mess up the viewing distance of your TV).
I get what Nintendo was doing. They made the NES mini controllers compatible with the Wiimote, and that's really smart. But this was definitely an oversight.
Here's a few ideas that I think would have been better:
1) Everything as it is now, but make the NES Classic also compatible with the Wii U Pro Controller. That linked article states that "you can also plug in a Wii Pro Controller or a Wii Classic Controller" but what he meant was the Classic Controller Pro which is different than the Wii U Pro Controller. The Wii U Pro controller is wireless, so that solves the problem of cable length. It also has a home button, so that solves the problem of not having the console near by and not having addition buttons on the NES Classic controller. And just like the Wii U console, don't include the Pro Controller with the NES Classic (keep it bundled with those two NES replica controller), just make it compatible.
2) Making the NES Classic controller wireless would have definitely raised the MSRP, so I understand the decision to make it wired. But what they should have done is made a button combo (Select + Start + A for example) that would have the same function as whatever button you need to press on the console to bring up menus. NES flash cart do this to bring up menus, I'm sure some emulators must have this function that you can custom set, I'm not sure why Nintendo couldn't have done it with the NES Classic. edit: Using a button combo to bring up the menus would mean you don't have to be close to the console, which means having longer (same length as real NES controllers) wouldn't matter.

Re: NES Classic
Having to go online to view the manuals is a bit of a bummer.
Re: NES Classic
Actually Ziggy I've used 3ft controllers, Turbo Duo I think had them that short. I usually don't like to sit across a room to play old precise pixel perfect titles anyway so it never bugged me so much as I'd just drag a chair over. The way this room is setup, pretty much end up not being in my comfy chair against the wall, but half between on the wall where I write this is my leather rolling office chair so it reaches fine, and the floor works too. It just never bothered me.
I did admittedly gloss over one asinine thing those lazy jerks did, QR codes. Seriously?! I know it's dumb but a lot of people don't have scanners or camera phone apps that pick up that crap and will interpret it into something useful. They clearly have good storage on there for all the little NES games emulated so there was no reason not to also include the Wii/U VC style text and some pics style manuals one bit.

It probably goes back to the same reason that the cords are so short. They're just using stuff they already have/will be utilizing for other purposes. If one of the Virtual Consoles is doing that, then they can just point the link to the same place. Maybe it lets them do multi-region more readily or something too.

For me a plus having the short cord length; been planning to buy two NES Classic controllers for my Wii.
All my consoles except the Wii are on my oversized "coffee" table in the living room. This puts all consoles at easy reach; the corded controllers not strung across the floor. It did mean running longer Composite, Audio, SVideo and Component cables under the carpet, but then the switch boxes are by the couch too.

EDIT
Just a little over a month to go! Found the NES Classic Controller as an individual item at the Target site.
