Recommend some games that dont take much HDD space.

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Recommend some games that dont take much HDD space.

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

Im on an HDD space budget at the moment as I only have a 80gb hard drive and a 32gb SSD that I use for the OS and important documents. At this moment I have 36gb left and Im curious what games that take up say less than 1.5gb that offer good replay value can be had. The games that I have that I enjoy most are Trackmania, Company of Heroes, Counter Strike Source, Age of Empires 2 so that should give you a good idea of what I like to play.

Thanks!

X-COM UFO Defense and X-COM Terror from the Deep are both fantastic. And they take up a few hundred meg.

really, if you like shooters on pc and you aren't playing tf2, well I'm upset with you, Ryan. It may be above your space limit but goddamn is it worth it. Aside from that, Good luck with anything modern, games these days usual take up around 3 gigs minimum if they're mainstream. If you wanna try something indie that might work out well, darwinia is probably small and Iji is actually pretty awesome
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

I have the Orange Box on Xbox 360. Too bad I can't use a mouse but it's still awesome. X-com is fun but I have played through it numerous times. Im saving up for a 320gb hard drive but it will be a while since I currently dont have a job. Yes, modern games are pretty much out of the question at the moment. I still question why I cant just run games off the DVD like a game console considering I have a decently fast DVD drive and plenty of ram. Even if the load times were longer it would still be nice for the people that didnt have ample hard drive space to be able to play with out copying the entire game over to their hard drive.

StarCraft, Deus Ex, and Final Fantasy VII are the only games I keep installed on my PC anymore.

It's simple. Streaming textures off of a DVD will incur some sort of fidelity or performance hit. They would have to use compressed textures (I.E. Like on the 360) just to keep the game with playable loading times. The only other option is to install the textures to HDD. So you either way you're gonna see problems. Be it an extra long initial loading time while textures and game data is streamed to HDD or directly to video/system memory. Or having a partial install every now and then similar to what happens on PS3 games. Let alone the problems that could arise from other system processes running in the background.

Plus there's the issue of how fast data can be transferred from a SATA 20x DVD-ROM (the fastest I'm aware of right now). The fastest I've seen so far is a maximum theoretical of 150MB/s. That's under half the speed of a standard SATA II mechanical drive (3Gbps). For me PC games already load too slow for my liking without doubling those times by forcing streaming off the DVD.

Don't get me wrong, it would be great if we could just pop a disc in our PCs and be playing a game within seconds but I just don't think it's possible given the nature of PCs and it would take quite a lot of programming to get a system like that working for every PC. PCs aren't like consoles they have millions of different combinations of hardware and software.

Personally I'd rather install a PC game and just have it on my HDD and never have to worry about having the disc in the drive at all. It's not like you are forced to just sit and watch the progress bar like you are on a PS3. You can do other things on a PC while it's working.

In Elite you can explore a universe with over 2000 planets, and it fits it all on one 300K floppy.

Elder scrolls II Daggerfall is not very hard drive taxing and it's world is *literally* twice the size of great britain. Like, to walk across daggerfall would take you as long as it would to walk across great britain twice.

Play old Doom games using the Doomsday engine!

First Halo takes up only 1.2GB, and Sim City 4 takes up "1.6 or more."

And i know it has a strange name but it's actually a platform game where you shoot aliens. And it's awesome at that.
