While he wasn't ever an official stretch goal, Avellone is now onboard as a writer for the exciting-looking Divinity: Original Sin 2. Here's Larian explaining how that came about:
"Before we launched our Kickstarter campaign, we asked the community what sort of reward and ideas they had in mind for our campaign. You guys came up with some interesting stuff, and one of the highest-voted ideas was getting Chris Avellone on board as a writer."

I haven't played Divinity Original Sin yet, but it was on my want-to-play list all last year. I almost started it this year, but then got sucked into Pillars Of Eternity. So I'm excited at this announcement.

I'm in the same boat, I've been wanting to play Divinity Original Sin for a while. Cool that they got Avellone. Also, somewhat related, if you want to hear what makes him tick as a writer/designer go listen to this: http://feeds.soundcloud.com/stream/2231 ... ellone.mp3

I haven't played any of the Divinity games, but several are in my backlog on GOG. I look forward to learning more about this next one, and I hope to one day get to them...though I have quite a way to go to get there.

Yeah I am excited for this news as well. Chris Avellone is a great gaming writer and a really nice guy as well. He has worked on some of my favorite games. I believe I am speaking for Dave as well when I say he was one of our favorite interviews. After the show he chatted for a bit and told us he appreciated our questions because they made him think and weren't the typical ones he has to repeatedly answer.

I also interviewed him about Pillars and Fallout series for RPGamer. Always very responsive and friendly. I met with him down in San Antonio at PAX for a bit last year and he stood around signing games and chatting it up with everyone. Just saying this as that level of engagement with both fans and media (big and small) goes a long way.

I already backed this game, but this news only reinforces my anticipation for this one.

holy shit, Original Sin 2 is on Early Access on Steam right now. It's got Act I (est. 8-12 hrs) and 4-player online co-op. Wow.

I still need to play the first game, though haha. Otherwise I'd prob be checking this out as much as I try to avoid Early Access.

Yeah, I recently picked up the original game, need to get to playing it some more. I liked what I saw, but I really need to dig into some optimal class designs. I went with whatever the "cleric" class is, with a thief in tow. I don't know if that's terribly optimal.

So was it more like Baldur's Gate or Diablo in design?

While I've only played Original Sin Enhanced Edition briefly, it'd skew closer to Baldur's Gate. Combat is turn based rather than a clickfest, more involved quest/dialogue systems, and so on.

I think the series in general tends to be, but the earlier games (I've only tried playing Divinity II) were more action-oriented for combat.

Yeah, more like Baldur's Gate, but more turn-based in nature. Think your typical SRPG, except without the grids. Or like Dragon Quarter. You expend AP to move / act.
