Not sure I'm alone in some of this, also not even sure if one of the problems is its fault or bad luck with the micro SD card.
Here's the deal I'm getting a RMA, a 2nd one now. Why? One is a known, early model units with the stylus had a manufacturing error on the plastic, causes the corners to crack or chip (especially the stylus corner.) It happened months ago, then again now I found it again. I wouldn't have noticed but had to pop off the better case I got after the original I had.
I thought I was overheating, and I can't nail this one down other than this. The microSD card not only will it not read anymore, but it gets stuck on checking, then turns off the tablet sort of, it goes black like it were dead/off. If you pop out the card, instantly PIP! back to life like nothing. Then I figured odd, but ok. It's cooler now with the card out, but then I was like ok, let's check the card. I toss it in an adapter and pop it into this computer. Whines because it's encrypted since I was using it as a storage device, not removable media and wants to format. I try that, fails, says the card is locked -- and it's not. Also the formatter says 16MB space which isn't right (64MB card.)
So I guess it either broke on its own, or whatever corruption in the tablet causing it to heat up then bomb until removed ate it alive. Grrr...out a card, and tablet until it's replaced. Anyone ever seen this before or have any idea?

Re: Shield tablet woes
no idea man. Which model do you have? The first model was prone to some issues I recall. The newer X1 should fix them. But I'm baffled by your problem. Sounds more like an OS problem than a hardware one, doesn't it? Maybe? You sure the firmware is all up to date?
Re: Shield tablet woes
It's the stylus model with the newer non meltdown recalled battery. I talked with the guy on the phone it's possible they sent me a 'new' but not refurb using the original crappy plastic corners the 1st one had as this was my second. The firmware and OS are up to date on it. What has me suspicious is why it heats up ever so with the card in the slot, and then it just turns off (holding power won't even reset/power it off even) until the card is removed. I don't think software would cause a meltdown and wreck a 64GB micro SD card. If it was just it being bitchy and ceasing up sure software, but the heat too? It has me confused.

Re: Shield tablet woes
The heat does make me think it is a faulty sd slot or something. Weird. I am not sure.
Re: Shield tablet woes
I called Nvidia corporate, they patched me to US tech level 2. Talked with the guy for awhile very nice. He's just going to RMA the thing, so I got to mail it in, then I get a new one. He says their warranty is leniant short of clear abuse so until the year is up you could get a dozen RMAs if it was necessary and wanted. I was curious asked if he knew anything about the rumored shield 2 line up, kind of laughed and said he couldn't comment basically from what I did ask exactly that it's real, it's better, and coming fairly soon which is nice. Hopefully the build quality on those are improved.
