Ever since DOOM came out I have an undying big preference for whipping out a shotgun single or double barrel pump action and just wreaking havoc in a first person shooter with it until I run clean out of shells. Nothing is more rewarding than softening up a few targets farther out with buckshot spray, to then hamburger them at close range if I don't sneak in and do that anyway first. As long as the game wasn't stupidly built to leave such a weapon at a gross disadvantage it's my primary source of fun.

Oooo, Tanooki's mentioning Doom's shotguns reminded me - the shotgun in Medal of Honor: Rising Sun was my jam.

Oh man, this thread is making me want to play these games! I loaded up Ecco 2 for a few minutes. I need to try that Bionic Commando game Ghegs mentioned; I haven't played it before. I just played through an enhanced DOOM 64 on PC not that long ago, but all of the DOOM mentions are making me want to jump back into hell. Oh, and I'm regretting selling my Turok 2 game now as I see the cerebral bore mentioned. I love when a game feels right!

You poor unexposed souls. You have not lived, until you've utterly eviscerated a screaming body to bloody bouncy bits, with multiple shotgun blasts in:

It is a crime against humanity this game isn't on GOG or Steam yet.

I remember that, it was nasty. For all the crap that game got when it came out (I'm thinking for lacking of Nazis for some) the game was pretty stunning especially how gritty and well rendered the whole Pearl Harbor sequence was done as it was crazy for its time. I can only imagine firing that one up in Dolphin(emu) at 1080p.

Let's not forget the Welrod silenced pistol in the Singapore Sling mission, the Japanese won't know what hit them in the head until it's too late!

Maria's Street Fighter-style special move in Dracula X
Doing a backflip with Richter and interrupting it with a whip strike in Dracula X
Zelda 2 down thrust
Ken's up-close, multi-hit, flaming shoryuken
An in-your-face gib in Unreal Tournament (original) with the primary fire on the flak cannon
A successful Haoh Sho Ko Ken in Art of Fighting (or really, any game with Ryo, but especially that one)

G Darius counter laser thing from captured ship. Words cannot express the incredulous wonder and mania I experienced the 1st time me and a friend pulled it off on a boss.

Super Dodgeball; hitting your opponent across the other screen (around the world) with a super throw (favorite is what I call the pizza throw).

Ultra combos in Killer instinct (bonus if knocking off a building).

Spinny death move taking out a crowd of other cars in F-Zero X (or just your rivall.

Road Rash 64: too many ridiculous situations to name. It's just fun to make people go flying.
Putting a stick in someone's spokes is always fun.

On the subject of down thrusts, that's always a satisfying element. I think that's why Duck Tales was so enjoyable for me (pogo attack is basically the same thing). Heck, even Mario attacks from overhead most of the time.

Now I am thinking of Doom, the Alien Total Conversion with the Aliens unique machine gun sound. A higher sound pitch compared to a regular machine gun, that should be replicated again in newer FPS games.
