Battlefield it is.
Yeah, I have that pre-ordered exclusively for a campaign with giant robots. I'm going to the trenches of Verdun for my FPS multiplayer fix.

Sunk a few hours into Mankind Divided today, my reaction is... I'm... not sure. But I can tell this game is going to extremely exhausting by the end of it.

What they have done is unload even more systems onto the game. Whereas in Human Revolution there were 2 hacking items, there are now 4. Now weapons can be customized on the fly. Now there are multiple bullet types (that take up different slots in the inventory). Now there is "salvage" that you pick up and can use to craft some items. Now there are literally, unusable items that are only used for selling, but take up inventory slots. There seems to be even more menus buried within menus. The controls on a controller, are absolutely insane. There are 4 commands tacked onto "Holding X + something", alone. Both joysticks pushed in go into different wheels, augs and weapons, etc. You guys have no idea. I'm not even sure I can begin to describe it, a keyboard might not even have enough options for this. I kept accidentally using health packs when I'd go to the weapon menu wheel.

And this might just be personal experience, but a potential issue with games nowadays is how it's sometimes simply hard to see things. That probably sounds weird but maybe some of you know what I'm getting at. The detail is so dense and there are way too many pointless things you can pickup and interact with, so it's kind of a cluster on the eyes. Games have to strike that balance of making it so things look believable but players should know what items and objects "stick out" in videogamey ways. It's just really hard for me to tell in this. This was kind of the case with HR, even with the gold outline to some items, but it was manageable. But I feel like a lot of game time is going to be added up simply from looking around a room for far too long, if that makes any sense.

Not a huge spoiler since it's super early game, but I'm pretty irked about David Sarif having a new voice actor. He sounds way younger and it just kind of ruined the entire reconnection to me.

So far no character or story bit is standing out. HR's beginning wasn't super thrilling either, nor was Invisible War's, but both of them seemed a bit more inviting and interesting where they throw you in. I'm not sure about MD.

Really digging the remote hacking aug. And multitools look like they do in the original Deus Ex so that's cool. The hacking minigame seems just as dumb as before unfortunately.

So, so far it kind of reminds me more of Thief 4 than HR in ways... in ways that are not so good. It is just so utterly complex and over the top with things, it's going to be taxing and crazy on my OCD gaming tendencies.

Harvey Smith after his mistakes with Invisible War and sometime when he built up Arkane Studios once said... "Less is more", something that I think Eidos Montreal maybe needs to take into consideration. I think this all but confirms that Dishonored 2 is probably going to be way better than this to me personally and Arkane Prey is looking extremely promising. I won't be surprised if they do this kind of game even better.

Anyways, that's all maybe harsh, but that's after almost 5 hours sunk into the beginning and feeling weird about it. I'm sure I'll still love this, the immersive FPS is one of my favorite genres, but I wonder how it'll stack up to HR in the end. I hear it doesn't really do much more to tie into the original Deus Ex which is unfortunate, I was hoping this would be the bridge between them. But it sounds like it is mostly stand alone again.

The more I play Mankind Divided the more I love it, though I finally figured out what threw me off and spiraled my thoughts and everything out of control... the main hub level is in broad daylight. WTF? I loved the trend of all Deus Ex (and Thief) levels being at night or in the dark. It should never change.

I don't really joke either, perhaps other fans know how crucial this can be. It's awkward.

Think I might restart System Shock 1 on difficulty "1" on everything haha. I left it all on 2 and it's insane how many enemies can gang up on you. I guess they constantly respawn like in SS2.

If you drop puzzles to the lowest they auto solve, so don't do that.

The way enemies work is they always respawn up to a certain number of a certain type of enemy for each floor. So the medical deck will always have a handful of zombies wandering around.

All I can say, is I beat SS with all difficulty levels on 2. It provided a consistent challenge without being overwhelming. I thought SS2 was harder actually. I think you'll find SS gets easier as you get better weapons and cybernetics.

I was impressed (but annoyed) by how many zombies ganged up on me at one point. It looked like 10 or more somehow, totally unexpected.

Laser weapons seem to be the best since you can easily replenish ammo for them?

I want to say I recall SS2 being really easy, outside of those spider girl things I think. I loved how tense things were while sneaking around and backtracking sometimes, since it was often better to avoid combat to spare ammo. Items seem more abundant in SS1, but it was bugging me backtracking a lot and getting ganged up on. lol

The Descent-esque hacking thing is hilarious.

It seems cool and I'll chip away at it, but I'll admit Deus Ex (1) has grabbed me a bit more again. I'm playing with the GMDX 8.0 mod which is pretty awesome so far. Some nice tweaks while retaining a mostly vanilla authentic experience. I've noticed this mod feels like it's made things way harder though, the enemy AI is improved as is their view distance it seems. But I look forward to breaking the game with the Dragon Sword as always. Even if HR and MD have the instant win button with takedowns, I really miss melee weapons in them.

Take note that in some cases in System Shock you can stop or at least partially hinder respawning enemies. Level 2 has a robot production facility you can shut down, and I don't believe anything ever respawns on that floor once you take it out. Respawns were the most troublesome on the first, third, and Reactor levels. Also things get much easier once you find the cyborg surgery station and swap it over to a spawn point for yourself.

Eventually you'll start finding weapons that make enemies almost absurdly easy to deal with. Seek ye the laser rapier, and that will carry you through most of the game.

Yea, the laser rapier be indeed a weapon of great power, that thou might smite thine enemies.
