An app for video game music lovers

Post by J T »

ZXTune:

This app is fantastic! It connects to archives of video game music, so you can listen to just about any NES, SNES, Gameboy, Genesis/Megadrive, etc. track that you want (particularly in the Josh W. collection). Much of the rest of the app is focused on ZX Spectrum, and mod music made for the ZX spectrum.

If you've already downloaded lots of your own tunes, it also can play most any type of VGM file as well (.sfc, .nfs, etc.).

So much great music in one app! Enjoy!

I am new to using chipset file types, like .nsf .spc and so on. I like that they take up little hard drive space, and they seem to sound pretty authentic when played on a workable vgm player.

Do other people use these file formats specific to the different consoles? Do you download ost's individually, or have you found complete console sets somewhere? Do you use any cool software that lets you isolate channels or anything like that?

I'm still old school using Winamp with plugins for whatever additional file type needed. Zophar.net is where I used to get rips.

For Genesis, I think .vgz is way better than .gym. I think vgz is newer or something.

Are there any iOS apps in the store that will use those old plugins? It's hard to find the best ones for NSF files. Some of the NSF progs really suck.

Zaphar's is a great resource! :D Thanks Xeogred.

I read about Foobar today, PresidentLeever, do you know if it is Linux only, or can it run on Windows? Also, do you have other options for isolating channels? I think it would be fun to just play with that feature when I really like a song and want to dissect and analyze it.

Pretty cool. I've been using MoDo for my chiptune stuff on Android, but linking into the archives like that is pretty sweet.

Hello guys!

I'm the author of ZXTune and very pleased for such a pleasant review:)

ZXTune is a crossplatform project, so also desktop version is available for the most popular OSes (windows/linux/macos). It has no online catalogues support, but it has much more wider supported compressors set instead.

Get your suitable version at official site http://zxtune.bitbucket.org

Very cool, Vitamin. Thanks.

It looks like it plays Amiga files, I will try out the support for modules and others in my collection.

Yes, some formats are supported.

Check out full features list at About->Plugins menu (both in desktop and Android version).
