N64 with Component Video???

Post by Cronson »

Is it possible to mod an N64 with component video? I'm wanting to get back into my N64 but I also want it to have the best picture quality possible. I had heard a rumor that from the inside of the system you could see how component could be made to work. Thoughts?

It's possible to do an RGB/SCART (the european standard which is also a step above s-video so about as close to component you can get) mod but the results can vary. You would also have to have a tv that was RGB compatible :/

Yeah, I think I've heard that. Running my n64 on a CRT monitor could be cool.

The best you are going to get out of the N64 is an interlaced signal. Very few games run in a full 480i mode anyway. The games that do need the expansion pack.

Most of rare's games ran in 480p mode along with most later releases.

But how to pump them out in 480p would be the hard part since the video gets downsampled to 480i before it exits the system.

just get an s-video cable and save yourself a headache. anything "better" would take an RGB mod, and since USA tv's don't have RGB/SCART, you'd have to convert the RGB signal to make use of it anyway. in all technicality, s-video is a from of component video, since it separates the video signal into more than one component, just not the 3 that we're used to.

N64 is what it is... Take it or leave it. S-Video is probably the best worthwhile option. Or emulate to get a better picture...

Svideo seems fine to me for older systems such as the N64 (and older) anything higher end seems pointless
