Retron 5 Diagnostic Feature Missing?

Post by ElkinFencer10 »

So I noticed that, following the last software update, my game diagnostic option seems to have disappeared from my Retron 5. I think that's what it was called - whatever let you see the game's specific CRC. I used it earlier this year, but once I updated the software, it seemed to have vanished. Has anyone else encountered this or know if it just got moved or renamed?

Beta feature, always enabled on the non-full releases. When I was helping them thoroughly bug test it a lot back when the firmware was rolling out fairly often it was always on. You know what it did with the CRCs and so on, they needed that to run it against their emulator and software lists to make sure games would be detected and dumped right. Roll back to the last beta or accept it's gone until the next.

Why would they take it out? That seems like a completely pointless change to make - counterproductive even if you consider that checking the CRC that way is the only reliable way to get cheats working on games that either aren't in their cheat database or from other regions.

Because as far as they're concerned it's none of your business really? :) It's there just so they can make sure the CRC that pops up matches their index or the games won't work. That's it.

If I own the cartridge, how is it not my business? Is it none of my business what the ISBN of my book is? Sure, it doesn't matter to most people, but it's an object that I physically own; it definitely is my business if I want to know about it.

Unfair comparison.

1. If the retron5 never existed or never gave that beta feature you wouldn't be complaining right now.
2. The ISBN is printed on the inside or outside cover of a book, nowhere is the CRC32 listed inside or outside the actual physical cartridge, box, or manual.

If you want to know about it, there's ways, just like how you can look up something within a book, find a third party search tool. But it's not something you're just entitled to that the maker of the product has to supply you. :) That's my point.

That's true, but is also makes zero logical sense to remove it. It would make sense if it hindered stability, but while it's not something I'm "entitled" to (nor are the scan lines or visual filters), there's no reason not to keep it in. I mean, by this point, you're just saying "They don't have keep it" and I'm just saying "But why would they remove it?" so I doubt you're ever going to say anything that actually answers that question, and I'll never say anything that changes your mind, but I think the point stands that removing that for a "final" release is a useless change to make.

I did answer you the first time. They removed it because it was only meant for beta testing purposes so they could see if a game was being read properly as it pops up the CRC it sees, not the one in the database we can not (only they have it on a sheet.) That's why they removed it, because it has no other purpose to them, which is why I said you don't like that, roll it back to the last beta or wait on the next. I'm not doding you, you just either aren't reading or accepting the answer I was given by the programmer over a year ago.
