Best game soundtracks ever

Post by glynnahab »

I've been noticing lately that we're getting lots of "Best _______ of all time" threads (one of which is my fault  ). Well, after spending some time today searching the net for guitar tabs on Mega Man 2, I've been thinking a lot about game music. Then Ack mentioned the greatness of the Final Fantasy 6 soundtrack in another thread, and it piqued my curiosity. So......

What's your favorite video game soundtrack?

I've recently ("recently" - meaning like 5 minutes ago) said that my number 1 would be between FF6 and Mega Man 2. Fairly generic choices, I know. So I'm hoping that some of you game music connoisseurs could enlighten me with some other less obvious soundtracks of similar quality.

(And just for the record, I've got most of Flash Man's song down on bass. It's annoying as hell to translate guitar tabs over to bass because of that damned B-string. My next unenviable task will be learning Heat Man's song. God help me...)

I'm really enjoying Mother 3i and Mother 3+. The Panzer Dragoon Soundtracks are also fantastic. All of them are wonderful. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus had great soundtracks. Also have to throw in Jet Grind Radio. I can't count the number of times I've danced in my car to that soundtrack. Megaman 2 has a great sound.

Also, while not many people have played it, I thought Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars on the GBA had a great soundtrack.

Oh, and Cave Story.
Can't forget that. Running Hell FTW.

The 'connoisseurs' sentence in the original post was actually directed mainly at you. I expect that you would definitely be able to name a couple soundtracks that no one would probably mention.

BTW - I actually bought Sub-Terrania due to your post regarding the music a while back. While the music really kicks ass, that game is fucking ruthless!

While I do say that Final Fantasy 6 holds that crown for me, there are many games that I cannot stress the awesomeness of the soundtrack, and I do have to give the Mega Man series a hand because rarely has any of the MM games soundtracks really let me down.

I would also like to take a moment and say that the music of the Silent Hill series, while twisted and bizarre, has also given me many hours of joy listening to it. Akira Yamaoka has consistently done some amazing work, and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's vocals are simply great.
