I definitely give games a chance, before I write them off. My biggest issue with current-gen is the fact that the developers are focusing their efforts on stories, and not gameplay. Graphics and cutscenes are nice for the first play through. After that you skip them, and realize that, that was all that was there.
Assassins creed was nice for the first 15minutes that I played it at my buddy's house. Then I went home and played prince of persia.
If Fable II is anything like Fable one, Im already bored of it. The false illusion of freedom bugs me. Sure you can do a lot, but what does it really matter? Massacre a whole village and have them hate you, then take out your trophy, and everything is OK.
My problem with modern FPS is that in a way i've played them all before. With an exception for Tactical shooters, theyre all the same thing, with a different setting. None of them are too challenging either. I can get through most of them in a single sitting, and none of them are enticing enough to warrant a play-through on a harder difficulty.
People complain that 16bit arcade games are too short, and too challenging(they only see the end cause they credit feed). Well modern FPS' are too long and not challenging.
Blockbuster games are mildly entertaining for the rental, but where are the games that shall stand the test of time, and rise-up as monuments for gamers to praise for years?
What happened to games?

Just call us creatures with distinctive tastes.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.
Re: What happened to games?
I am only 24years old, but I am not sure if we are the people who got older.
We come from generation when gaming was simpler and games were less in numbers. We enjoyed games because of what they are, not because of what they compared to. I recall playing N64 wrestling games and having my brains oozing in amazement. We didn't have to say "Well, compare graphics to this game, it is so and so. Compare gameplay to this game it is so and so". I do not recall comparing. If the game looks fun we did enjoy it.
I was amazed , and maybe you did so, to find reviews of games that were blast when you were younger to have low review score even back then. I guess reviews are not the way to measure if the game is worth getting or not.
Maybe this generation is about just buying the next game as long as it has big guns and the best graphics. I remember when we used to buy a game we were dedicated to it, we don't buy a bunch of them. Few, but we keeping playing these few.
I got to play Resistance 2 myself yesterday. It is a great game, graphics and gameplay wise. But guess what? It is just another shooter, no new experience, nothing to go out of your way to buy it for $60 or brag about it. Almost every FPS is like that today, top graphics and beating down enemies. If it was the only one of it is kind, it sure would be fantastic, but the market is over saturated with this stuff. I do not own a ps3, but I do not know what is the difference between killzone, resistance, and haze. I know haze is really bad as I heard, but it got to that level where you can't see a difference.
Do not get me wrong, some current generation games are fantastic. Gears of War was something totally new, I am drooling to play Bioshock, LBP is something to that turns attention and unique enough to be remembered for ever, and Mario Galaxy looks how videogames as we remember them would turn out in the future, great fun and cartoonish gameplay. But As for the rest, its just the same old story happening again and again. I guess we are lacking variety.

Re: What happened to games?
Was gears of war TOTALLY new? all they did was devote a button to taking cover. Ive been doing that since Doom, manually.
Now don't get me wrong. I am not calling these games, BAD. I'm just feeling as though the developers and producers are mocking us, when they turn out clone after clone, with sequel after sequel, and NOTHING is changing.

Haze was the one shooter that had some inovation but it got bad reviews
. I played it and thought it was a ton of fun. Especially being on the rebelion in multiplayer, playing dead, then going and stabing somebody in the back. Thats what they get for using drugs xD.
Older. Not wiser.
