You RPG gamers can play that turn-based nonsense with any old controller you like.
We who play 2D platformers, arcade fighters, and shoot 'em ups need a good D-pad or an arcade stick.
I think I prefer analog sticks over dpads for retro games

Interesting preference. I prefer a D-pad. Travel distance and all that.

For sure. Even with new games like New Super Mario Bros U, I prefer the D pad.samsonlonghair wrote:We who play 2D platformers, arcade fighters, and shoot 'em ups need a good D-pad or an arcade stick.
I've gotten used to the Gamecube/Xbox bizarre diagonal positioning for the analog sticks, but I definitely prefer them to be parallel (preferably at the top like the Wii U Pro Controller rather than at the bottom like PlayStation).

I can agree with this. I think since I've moved into console gaming, I've spent years working with a stick, and that's just what I'm used to now. In many games where you are meant to use a d-pad, retro or not, I find using a stick easier, or that it allows me quicker action. One that comes to mind from recent play was Catherine- much easier for me with the stick, and I could never manage to get above a bronze with the d-pad.
On the other hand, if jump is up on the d-pad/stick, I have to go with the d-pad or else I constantly end up jumping accidentally.

Drunk again so I jump in again. I do prefer an arcade stick to play puzzle-type arcade games - Tetris, Puyo and the like. For Pac-man it's a must if I want to succeed. I still can't play platformers well with them (sad when playing Metal Slug and pass the custom built arcade controller with MVS colored buttons to someone else).
A few times I've tried to build a gaming-centric PC with emphasis on analog steering wheel controls. For the most part, the racing games respond really well. The main problem is I can't play racing games well with a steering wheel. Only a Playstation controller; Too much Ridge Racer and Gran Turismo to attempt change at this point. I did find an interesting and supremely satisfying control scheme for Tetris and Puyo games using steering wheel control for the gameplay. Left and Right are steering - good emulators and native windows games allow analog horizontal control with good speed while I map drop to the gas pedal. Analog adjust it into place and stomp to drop. Mario is very difficult with these controls, tho Mega Man is decent.
Talking about Stomp to Drop - another thing I've always wanted was the USB big enter key.

For programming, I can see this as extremely satisfying after entering a powerful command.

That sounds like a lot of fun actually.Anapan wrote: I did find an interesting and supremely satisfying control scheme for Tetris and Puyo games using steering wheel control for the gameplay. A little off topic, but I was trying to remember where I had seen this before, and I found it:Anapan wrote:Talking about Stomp to Drop - another thing I've always wanted was the USB big enter key.

Looks like something that would be fun for a minute or two, then just take up space.
With dual shock controllers, I sometimes have to use the analog stick for games I would prefer to use a d-pad with, because the d-pads on those controllers are so bad. It's never ideal, though.

maybe doesnt really count as analog but, i started using my nes max regularly just to give my other controllers a rest from the abuse.. few days later, i cant seem to play anymore if its not a nes max for nes games.
so in essence it depends on what youre used to
