The Green Inferno

Ehh. It had all the nasty gore and uncomfortable moments I hoped and expected, but the social commentary fell kind of flat for me. I think it had a bit of a point, but considering the situation didn't make the impact it should have. I think it would have been better without it, just be a cannibal horror movie and nothing else. I'd say like a 7/10. Pretty good, could have been better.

I did find it both funny and horrible that some of the scenes were real fear. Hitchcock like, but somewhat less terrible. Somewhat.

I'd say it was like a 6/10 for me. But I'm with you for the most part. Some stuff felt jarringly out of place to me though. The scene when the girl "gets sick" felt like it was supposed to be silly. The scene when a mob of canibals eat a dude who's running away Day Of The Dead style felt like "hey, that's not possible!" y'know? But it had some good/scary scenes for sure. That said, I'd rank it as my least favorite Eli Roth movie.

I haven't seen any of the other Roth movies, so I can't really comment. Hostel seems like something that might actually bother me, which is why I've never seen any of them.

Agree on the girl getting sick- I thought that might be a reference back to the guy mentioning mosquitoes could still give her yellow fever, but they didn't mention it so it seemed pointless. IMO them eating the guy zombie style was no big for me, though I definitely get it if someone doesn't like it. The "pork" scene could have just a bit better build up though, if there had been an off hand reference to long pork back at the college that would have taken it up another notch for me.

The Most Dangerous Game

I regularly hunt the most dangerous game, if by "most dangerous" you mean "sucky" and by "game" you mean "noiseredux." In all seriousness though, I actually really enjoyed this 1932 movie. It's ridiculously over the top thanks to a wonderful performance by Leslie Blanks as the supreme hunter Count Zaroff, while Joel McCrea plays his quarry, another prize hunter who resorts to mantrapping and subterfuge to take on Zaroff's men and dogs, all for the lovely Fay Wray, who Zaroff totally evilly makes the prize of the hunt without consulting. Funny enough, the movie was also filmed on the same sets with two of the same actors and much of the same crew as 1933's King Kong.

There are also a bunch of mute Cossacks with beards running around, because why not? Who doesn't love this face:

Actually, he kind of reminds me of Boris Karloff's mute butler in The Old Dark House...

The Most Dangerous Game and The Old Dark House are both awesome. I am glad that you enjoyed them. Are there any other 1930s horror/thriller films you recommend? I have seen several of them, but I am always looking for more.

EDIT:...not counting the classic Universal horror films, of course. I have seen all of those.

The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933). It's rad, and arguably my favorite Fritz Lang film. Moreover, only a passing familiarity with its silent predecessor is necessary to enjoy it. (Skip the sequel, however. Despite its great title, it's pretty terrible.)

White Zombie(1932) - and if you like it, follow it with 1933's Supernatural
Vampyr(1932)
The Ghoul(1933)
Mark of the Vampire(1935)
Mad Love(1935)

There is a ton of stuff from both Lugosi and Karloff during this decade, but unfortunately a lot of it is...well, it skews low budget pretty quickly.

Saw Suicide Squad the other day, I thought it was much better than BvS (although I thought that was pretty ok.) I can see what people are complaining about, but I feel like they just need to better set their expectations for a movie. There's a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense, but is there any of these comic book movies that don't have stuff that doesn't make sense if you look at it too hard?

This is on Netflix, and it's pretty damn good. It is tense and unnerving for a very long time and then it becomes disturbing in new ways. I can't detail it much without ruining the plot.

It's no masterpiece, but it was much better than I expected. Definitely worth a look if you have access to it.

I still can't help but think, however, that DC really doesn't know how to manage their movie universe. Marvel has done such a fantastic job growing their world and keeping in relatively popular. DC, meanwhile, has had to ride on foreign movie sales to cover their costs. If they can't break even in the US market and win over critics, do we really have any faith that they can do their characters the kind of justice they do on TV and in animation?

In celebration of the Rio games closing, I've re-watched Elite Squad and Elite Squad :Enemy Within. Great series and a real shame that Jose Padilha didn't have total control over the remake of Robocop.
