GH Guitars compatability question
I have 2 GH Guitars for PS2. If I were to buy a Wii or a PS3, is there some sort of adapters that would allow them to work on the new systems? Just curious about the future.
Re: GH Guitars compatability question
Nothing for the Wii. As I recall, there are a couple of adapters for the PS3, but they seem to get mixed results.

Re: GH Guitars compatability question
Are we talking about the same PS2 game played on the PS3 or a different game?
Obviously PS2 to Wii won't work.
PS2 to PS3 with same game through backwards compatibility (on certain PS3s) and a ps2-usb adaptor might work. However using a PS2 guitar on a PS3 version of GH/Rock Band probably won't work.
Considering that you can usually get the GH games with controller for about £15-20 over the price of the game on it's own I can't see that it's particularly worth it to be honest. Especially when you factor in the cost of the adaptor. You might as well pay that little bit extra and get a guitar that's 100% going to work and be wireless to boot...
Off-topic: Why the fuck does the PS3 need dongles for the guitar hero controllers?! Doesn't it use Bluetooth for it's wireless communication for input devices? If the same manufacturers can use Microsoft's proprietary wireless format (which incurs extra cost for MS components and the licence for it) surely it's cheaper to just use bluetooth for the PS3? I laugh at my friend's GH:WT setup with it's dongles just hanging out daisy chained.

Re: GH Guitars compatability question
PS2 guitar on the PS3 can be done, but you have to use the right adapter. I think Pelican made one that was advertised to work and it had a home button on the adapter, so you can look for that.
There are others, but I read the compatibility was spotty, the strum bar worked in reverse, up was down, etc... and the sensor that activated the star power didn't work right either.

I wonder the same thing. And the PS3 SF4 pads also have a USB attachment (which is about the size of a USB drive) for their connection. I can't figure out why they don't just make them Bluetooth.Niode wrote:Off-topic: Why the fuck does the PS3 need dongles for the guitar hero controllers?! Re: GH Guitars compatability question
It's not only that but these stupid dongles tend to take over your controllers so instead of just being able to turn your PS3 on with your Dualshock 3 it puts your DS3 on port 2 and then all your games don't work. Why doesn't the PS3 just assume the controller you switch the console on is the one you want to use.
It's hardly 'wireless' when I have to get up and unplug the adaptor when I don't want to use the controller. They might as well have charged less and had a wired controller and be done with it. It's the exact same thing.

Re: GH Guitars compatability question
You do realize that you can hold down the PS button after you launch a game and reset the number for your controller. That's what I do so I don't have to unplug my Rock Band stuff.

Re: GH Guitars compatability question
Yeah I know but it's such a sodding pain. Why doesn't it just assume the controller you turn the system on is controller 1. The 360 manages this without any issue. Even when you have Rock Band controllers plugged in.

Re: GH Guitars compatability question
It was cheaper for Red-Octane to use the dongle than rather use Bluetooth on the ps3. I think all of the first party peripherals from Sony [controllers, remotes, headsets etc..] are Bluetooth, which is why all other 3rd party peripherals require some dongle.
I'm back!
Re: GH Guitars compatability question
Bluetooth is an open standard though. If they can pay microsoft to licence their tech for their guitar hero controls then why can't they just use the Bluetooth wireless standard? The bluetooth stack is already there in the console it's just a matter of pairing the device with the console. I just don't understand why they wouldn't do that. Surely it costs them more to manufacture a dongle than it would to just implement a class 1 device into the controllers.
