Last night I set up an MSX emulator on my PSP. I got it working marvelously, every game I tested on it worked fine.

Except of course Malaya's Treasure. :?

So it was back to BlueMSX and the dorkcave desktop for it.

This game reminds me of a more simple La-Mulana, except Malaya's Treasure is stage based. But all the same, you're exploring jungles and ruins and caves looking for the path to the famed treasure. Along the way you talk to NPCs who aid you in various ways (info) and sell stuff to you. The gameplay reminds me of Super Pitfall at times, with a dash of Castlevania 2. Anyway I finished the first stage last night, and enjoyed it. So far so good.

Alright, so I finished up Malaya's Treasure.

Games I've beaten for the SGC'16:

Aquales | 1991 | Sharp X68000
Beneath Apple Manor | 1978 | Apple II
Night Slave | 1996 | PC-98
Rusty | 1993 | PC-98
Shadow Tower | 1998 | PlayStation
The Scheme | 1988 | PC-88
Malaya's Treasure | 1989 | MSX

Games redacted from my initial overly long list:

Quest For Glory: So You Want To Be A Hero | 1989/1992 | DOS
Battlezone II: Combat Comander | 1999 | PC
Dragon Quest II | 1987/1999 | Game Boy Color
Policenauts | 1994/1996 | PlayStation
New Devil Golvellius | 1988 | MSX2

The last game I plan to beat for SGC'16:

Shadow Tower Abyss

It's awful lonely up in this thread lately. Has everyone else dropped out now? :?

I'm not done yet! I only have two games left on my list - Decathlete and Perfect Dark - and I already have beaten 10+ games for the challenge. I closed on a new house yesterday; so I will be occupied with other things for a bit. (You can expect a lot of 3DS and iOS games on my "games beaten" list for a while...but I hope to unpack Decathlete before the end of the Olympic Games.)

Congratulations!

(I too am about to buy a new house, and then have to move all our stuff 3.5 hours away. I totally understand the "I'm gonna be busy for a while" thing.)

Shadow Tower Abyss

So this is the final game I'm dedicating to the SGC'16. Shadow Tower Abyss is something I've been very interested in playing since the English translation released years back. But I kept putting it off due to wanting to finish all the other first person FromSoftware dungeon crawlers prior to it. I got those done, so here we are.

I put two hours into STA last night, and I had quite an experience. The game starts off with your character (a young man) being led to a cavern entrance in a deep dark forest. Legends speak of a spear hidden within that grants mighty power to its wielder. As you step into the cavern, the Old Man traps you inside. Suddenly your torch goes out, and you're surrounded in darkness. Gradually your eyes get used to the dark, and the world starts to come into focus again. You are alone in an unknown subterranean world, with nothing but a pistol in your inventory. No one is here to tell you where to go. No one is here to help you survive. You are lost in the dreadful deep. Now be self sufficient and survive. Learn or die. No one cares about you down here. You are on your own.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Image

A lot happened in those two hours. I'm not Ack, so I'm not gonna give a ten paragraph play by play, sorry. But I looted corpses for meager gear. I fought vicious monsters in frantic bloodthirsty combat. I made a lot of progress, fell into a trap, got killed, lost thirty minutes of progress. I started over, made it further this time. Talked a dire boat creature into giving me a ride down an underground river. Accessed a new area. Was able to save. Made a lot of progress, went too far into a lair of ferocious fire and ice beasts, all my weapons broke, I became overwhelmed, I died. I lost another thirty minutes of progress. I started over from the save. Went a different way. Survived exploring a creepy insect hoard area, found another save. Saved. Called it quits for a night. Was blown away by the awesomeness.

Image

The thing that really stands out for me with Abyss versus the original Shadow Tower, is how much more vicious combat is. You can literally cut creatures limb to limb, if not decapitate them. Fighting an ogre coming at you with a big axe? Shoot his axe holding arm off. Being chased by a vicious giant cricket? Blow its legs off. (It'll still squirm toward you, but much slower.) And yes, Shadow Tower Abyss has guns. With no aiming reticle mind you, and no auto-aim, so you better get good at compensating. You've also got a large variety of melee weapons as well. But everything falls apart and degrades as you use it. Don't get too attached to any one piece of gear, it's not gonna last long against cave spider acid.

Image

I'll go ahead and say this game kicks ass. I have no doubt I'm in for an awesome time. Did I mention Shadow Tower Abyss actually lets you use DUAL ANALOG CONTROLS? As in modern FPS style controls? Yes, the biggest complaint everybody always had about FromSoftware's first person controls is finally addressed here. And don't even get me started on the killer atmosphere. Everybody knows FromSoftware are kings of immersion, so let's just say their legacy is in good working order in Abyss.

Image

Yeah this game is fucking wicked so far. I wish I was at home playing it right now. I legit considered calling in sick today and playing it all day. But I'm a responsible grown up blah blah you know so, ergh. Look, I've got seven lords to kill, a spear to find, an abyss to escape from, and plenty of juicy souls to devour. A man's got to have priorities right? Right?! :(

Congrats! (And, good luck with the move!)

Even with a vacation, it has been a stressful time buying the house, arranging financing, selling our previous house, cleaning and repairing the new house, and moving all of our stuff. Our new house is only 20 minutes away from our old house, but packing everything up and moving over there (this weekend!) is going to be a ton of work.

I am so jealous I could spit. I am unhooking all of my consoles tonight, and it may be a few weeks before I have them set up again. :( Oh well, at least I have my 3DS to keep me company...

Oh, I do, I do. But there's only one Ack, with one Ack style. We don't need any imitators up in here.

I'll say this much about finishing Shadow Tower Abyss... once it's done, I'll finally allow myself to check out FromSoftware's third person dungeon crawlers. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and all those. I'm really hoping those games are as ball bustingly hard as I've been lead to believe over the years. If not, I will lose what little respect I have left for the gaming community. No really, they better kick my ass. :?

Hey man, you took one for the team with Dragon Quest 2, giving me the skinny. I'm doing the same for you with Shadow Tower Abyss. It'll be there for you when you're ready!

As much as I don't want to make your expectations unrealistic... From all you've written about the previous From Software games, I think you're really going to enjoy and appreciate the Soulsborne games when you get to them. I look forward to reading your thoughts.

How much they challenge you will probably depend on a lot of factors. They are games that demand skill to succeed, but they also greatly reward it - Dark Souls took me over 60 hours, with a boss or two halting progress for days (and most of them taking a number of attempts). Yet, I can go to Youtube, and watch someone speed run it in well under an hour, barely taking a hit. Could be I just suck, but I think it's fair to say that the bar is set relatively high compared to most games on the market.

Meanwhile, I had more trouble with some encounters in Halo 5 on Normal than anything in King's Field IV. I couldn't quite call it easy, but I didn't find it hard either. Maybe things in that just skewed closer to games I've put more time into. So I would at least say that the challenge present is different.

We have to keep in mind that some of King's Field IV's difficulty comes from its key puzzles and confusing navigation, rather than mere combat encounters. IIRC you said you used a walkthrough to get through certain parts of KFIV right? So that mitigated some of the inherent challenge.

I feel compelled to mention King's Field IV isn't the hardest of the bunch either. To rank all the FromSoftware first person dungeon crawlers from greatest to least difficulty:

King's Field III
King's Field II
Shadow Tower
King's Field IV
King's Field I
Eternal Ring

I don't know where Shadow Tower Abyss fits in that list yet.
