What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Noise, what did you think of Batman v Superman? If you also thought that was greatly entertaining, then perhaps you and the critics are just watching for very different things.

I haven't seen it yet. I was planning to watch the R-rated version which I've heard is a step up from the theatrical cut.marurun wrote:Noise, what did you think of Batman v Superman? There's a Forbes article that I think really sums up my take on this: http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/20 ... 6f75885ce4

I dunno, if the additions mentioned earlier in the thread are the extent of the changes, then they don't exactly fix a lot of the problems it has.noiseredux wrote: I haven't seen it yet. I was planning to watch the R-rated version which I've heard is a step up from the theatrical cut.
I saw Suicide Squad opening night because a friend wanted to go (I usually just wait for Blu-rays). Objectively, it's a bad movie, and reviews skewering it aren't wrong. Some of the performances are enjoyable on their own merits - as mentioned, Margot Robbie is fantastic, 90s Will Smith is always fun to watch whatever his in-movie name is, that sort of thing. As a whole film, it's just not good, and has little excuse not to be with all the money and talent involved.
How much of that is due to the executive/focus group meddling, it's hard to say.
Still doesn't kill all entertainment value, particularly considering that superhero comics are rarely perfect either. Kind of like BvS, I think it's still probably enjoyable for comics fans, who are likely used to just honing in on the parts they like, and glossing over the rest. If we didn't have far better constructed comic book movies to compare to, critics might not be judging so harshly.

I do totally understand that. Maybe the 'problem' is that critics (and some audience members I guess) are expecting that all comic book movies should be The Dark Knight or something. But I mean, this is Suicide Squad. I don't know, I sort of expected that it should be kind of a crazy, bright, fast, fun mess. And I say Mess with a tone of endearment. To put it another way, I guess I expected it to be a big budget B-Movie with big stars in it. And that's kind of what it was.isiolia wrote:If we didn't have far better constructed comic book movies to compare to, critics might not be judging so harshly.
As maru said, maybe I was just looking for something different - and that happened to be what got delivered. I think that what some saw as an incoherent mess, I saw as uniquely fun. I don't know.

Good or not I can't really bring myself to care much right now. First open world games fatigue, now I'm completely bored and over superhero movies. And even when they get slammed like this they continue to set records. So I guess we have another 20 years of 10 superhero movies a year.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Well, they pretty much have to. I've heard once everything is taken into account, Suicide Squad will have to clear $800 million to actually see a profit.Xeogred wrote:And even when they get slammed like this they continue to set records.

No doubt. Will Smith doesn't get out of bed for less than twenty mil plus a slice of the gross.Ack wrote:Well, they pretty much have to. I think there's too much latching on to whatever looks marketable at the time. Superheroes, certainly, but genre material in general has seen a lot of adaptation lately. Nothing new, of course, and we always wind up with at least a handful of standout shows or movies. At least we also seem to have more not-superhero comics being adapted too, maybe as a result.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
One of the problems with superhero movies is that if you go the Marvel route and want to connect them with a universe, you have to make a crap ton of them and release them regularly. Otherwise you are back to the stand-alone hero route where you reboot every 10 years.

The Green Inferno
Ehh. It had all the nasty gore and uncomfortable moments I hoped and expected, but the social commentary fell kind of flat for me. I think it had a bit of a point, but considering the situation didn't make the impact it should have. I think it would have been better without it, just be a cannibal horror movie and nothing else. I'd say like a 7/10. Pretty good, could have been better.
I did find it both funny and horrible that some of the scenes were real fear. Hitchcock like, but somewhat less terrible. Somewhat.
